For awhile, I've been using my Vizio 22" 1080p TV as both a regular TV and as my desktop's monitor for the last year or so, though for this upcoming academic year I plan on having my TV (and Xbox 360) on a TV stand instead of the desk (as I have done last academic year). So I need a new monitor to keep using my newly-upgraded desktop (gheez, this thing's basically the Ship of Theseus, huh...?).
Anyway, I was wondering if anyone on NBR has a few pointers for a decent-enough display, with my only hard requirement being that it *must* be 1080p or better (though at a budget, it'll probably just be 1080p only) and have a HDMI connection. Don't need IPS, don't need USB ports, don't need anything fancy-looking, etc.; it just has to be functional and have a decent picture. Any suggestions?

Probably whatever come on sale, 22-23inch ips, asus/auo/hp/lg, usually run for 120-130. Tn at this level is only 10-20 dollar less.
Some w.o vesa go even lower from time to time. -
Hmm, interesting. I wasn't expecting IPS to be so close to TN in price in this range. Any thoughts on Hanns-G or Acer monitors in this range? I know that Acer's laptops are pretty iffy on build quality, but maybe their monitors are different?
-
Acer is pretty much asus quality wise as far as i can tell.
I would say tn is less prone to quality issue, and their view angle is much better compare to those 768p laptop screen. Ips one is well.. Ips but you may get one with funny bleeds and glows. -
Amazon.com: Viewsonic VX2450WM-LED 24-Inch (23.6-Inch Vis) Widescreen LED Monitor with Full HD 1080p and Speakers - Black: Computers & Accessories
i bought this off ebay for $94. used/refurbished. probably undesirable to most, but i don't care for using used items so long as they function as intended and for the long-term.
amazon has it for roughly $185.
i did quite a bit of research and wanted to maximize value. if you're someone like me who isn't the most informed consumer and just cares about the essentials (picture quality, durability, value) and could care a bit less about viewing angles and those sorts of criteria, then maybe you'll find the viewsonic is right up your alley. it's not to say those elements are useless, it's just to convey the point that every consumer values different qualities, wise or not.
so long as we're on the subject of value, supposedly these klipsch 2.1s are fantastic value as well. recommended to me in a different thread. i intend to buy them in a monthish
Amazon.com : Klipsch ProMedia 2.1 THX Certified Computer Speaker System (Black) : Electronics
if you really want to splurge, this dell monitor is supposedly as good as you can get in the price range.
Amazon.com: Dell UltraSharp U2412M 24" LED LCD Monitor - 16:10 - 8 ms: Computers & Accessories
i don't really game as much as i used to. was an avid mmo player back in the day, but my computer use is centered more around streaming football matches and watching HD games after the fact. most of my purchases are made with that in mind. so, depending on what your usage is on your computer, you may be looking for something different.
can't wait to get my hands on the w230st.
good luck to you. -
Hmm, completely forgot that I'd need speakers (for monitors that don't have them)... Thanks for reminding me about that.
My desktop will mostly be a gamer, though I hear that IPS displays are just about as good as TN for gaming these days with somewhat similar response times (I honestly couldn't care about +/- 4ms difference). I have plenty of time to search, so I'll shop around. -
If you have a beefy gpu, 120hz ftw.
-
asus features a monitor in a similar price range, but i never got a chance to compare them. -
. I'm fine with 60Hz (and 2D) anyway.
-
If you've got time, I'd keep on eye out on this
For only $338.99 each when QTY 50+ purchased - [OPEN BOX] 27" IPS LED CrystalPro Monitor WQHD 2560x1440
Open box version is $340 (out of stock right now) but I have seen it on sale once before for just over 300. I dunno if it's worth it to you for all that extra resolution and size. Unfortunately mono doesn't yet carry anything smaller/cheaper. -
wow.. looks like an absolute beast of a monitor. might be one to try when my pockets become a bit more heavy
-
You checked Dell outlet? You can probably find a decent flat panel there for a reasonable price.
-
Since matte is not a prerequisite, have you considered dell IPS S2240L 1920x1080.. ?
-
it's something to aspire to. the monitors look really classy. the viewsonic should suffice in the near term. -
Dell DFS has the 2209WA monitor for cheap. Used to have three of those monitors, and I loved 'em. 100 day warranty but Dell's refurb monitors have never been a problem with me.
Official Dell Store | Refurbished Dell UltraSharp 2209WA 22-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor
1680x1050, so not exactly 1080p. But its a nice enough monitor that it is worth mentioning. -
I'd recommend the Dell U2412M, but I'm biased because I happen to own it.
It's really refreshing to see a 1920x1200 16:10 monitor nowadays and it has very good display and build quality for the price as well as a lot of adjustment (tilt, swivel, height). It uses a low-end 6-bit e-IPS panel but this is par for the course at this price range. I can't really complain though as viewing angles are great and colors are good. No serious ghosting problems when gaming as far as I can tell. If you can afford it this is the one I'd go for.
For something within your budget I'd check out the Acer H236HL. It's slightly smaller (23'' vs. 24") and 16:9 1920x1080 but also an e-IPS panel. It's pretty popular amongst budget surround gamers because of its very slim bezel, but other than that I don't know much about it as I haven't personally used it. The only stand adjustment is tilt and I'd suspect that its build and display quality are both inferior to the Dell, but there's a reason it's $100 cheaper. Not to mention Acer displays have nowhere near the reputation that Dell displays have. -
EDIT: I went up one size in the search filter on the Dell Outlet site and found this: http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/popupproductdetail.aspx?sku=320-9801&
24" Monitor and they're advertising it for $187. Don't know if that's too big or too pricy for you style, but it's worth a lookey-see, yes? -
Judging by the reviews and photos, glare and reflections will be a major issue due to the edge-to-edge glass and glossy coating over everything. It's meant to be used in a dark studio setting, hence the S designation. Other than that, it looks to be a great display on paper with an incredible 5000:1 static contrast ratio due to the 8-bit VA panel. I think if the OP can overlook the extreme glossiness of the S2440L then it's probably the best choice mentioned so far. -
That monitor sure does look interesting. Though I'm giving myself until the end of August to buy a monitor, so i have plenty of time to wait and see what deals come up. I'm just curious what people think about the more budget-oriented 1080p, HDMI monitors (though the 22"- 24" Ultrasharps look very good, and ill keep an eye for them in Dell's outlet). HDMI (or DVI, but rather have HDMI) is a hard requirement since I'm not willing to replace my GPU (already spent enough on upgrades this year).
Thanks for the suggestions so far, everybody. -
I can't recommend the really cheap stuff because they are almost all TN panels with washed out colors and horrible viewing angles, built from glossy and flimsy plastic, have very limited connectivity, and just flat-out look ugly. Display quality is often no better than the average notebook screen as well. Spend just a little bit more and you can get something which looks and feels so much better, such as something with an e-IPS or VA panel. I don't know, maybe my standards are too high, but I'm just a sucker for a good display.
Also, it would be useful if you mentioned what your budget is, since "budget" can mean different things to different people, and what you plan to use it for, since I never really got that info from your OP. I'm assuming gaming is one of them, but is what about photo and video editing for example? -
Adapter is 2-3 dollars, hdmi to dvi cable is 5-6 so dvi should not be a problem.
newegg openbox monitors had some good deals. -
Dell Outlet home -> Monitors -> Filter for 24" Screens. -
there really are some fantastic monitors listed there.
i may have to make a dell ips monitor my next upgrade after my viewsonic. -
Decided to heck out other websites as well, and surprisingly enough I found a good monitor at a decent price on Bestbuy's website:
AOC 21.5" IPS LED HD Monitor I2269VW - Best Buy
22", 1080p, IPS, and 5-6ms response for $119.99 + tax (so it'll come out cheaper than stuff I saw on Newegg, and I don't have to deal with a MIR). Went to the local Bestbuy and they had one on display and it looked amazing (though I suspect that they also miscalibrated it to steer customers to the more expensive monitors, though I'm on to them). Only minor issue is that it's VGA/DVI-only, no HDMI, though for the price I'm okay with that (I have a spare DVI and VGA cable). Plus I'll have to look into speakers when some good ones go on sale (until then, I have my HD 429 headphones).
I've only read review of it on Bestbuy's site, so I'm guessing it's a BB-only model. Any thoughts? I asked about the sale and they said that it ends this Saturday, so I have a few days to think it over. -
Bump?

(Did you need more suggestions?) -
I was at my local Best Buy earlier today and checked out that one as well as this one. I was mildly impressed with the image quality but not with the build quality. These are both cheap no-frills units and it shows in the construction. I thought the design of the 23" one, with the brushed metal and thinner bezel, looked a lot sleeker and that's the one I'd get if I had to choose between the two.
Personally though, I'd get a Dell. Since you're fine with something on the smaller side, the 21.5" Dell S2240L is $160 refurb at the Dell Outlet. It's basically a smaller version of the 24" S2440L but with an IPS instead of VA panel. For me the extra $40 is worth it for something better-built from a reputable company instead of a no-name brand like AOC. -
If spendomg extra, may as well wait for ultrasharp sell. Personally, I refrain buying from dell outlet monitor(unless crazy deal on 27/30) as they only carry 90 day warranty when the budget monitors all carry 3years.
-
I've had good luck with AOC before, and it uses a LG IPS display, probably the same as other, more expensive monitors in that class. I'm going to go back to Bestbuy on Thursday and look at it (and others) again and probably pick it up. I did check out the Dell refurbs and i don't see the point in getting a non-Ultrasharp, especially with only 90 days warranty, for more than a new brick-and-mortar monitor. Plus, seeing something in the store is especially helpful for something like monitors (one of the few things i am fine buying locally).

here you go Jarhead, just saw this
BenQ GW2750HM 27IN Widescreen A-MVA LED Monitor 20M:1 4MS HDMI DVI VGA Black Speaker
$200, 27 inches, 1080p. Brand new with warranty. Enjoy! -
Well, I already decided to pick up the AOC I2269VW and now it's sitting in my living room about to be installed. Total with tax was $129.58.
Thanks for the help guys. -
picked up a refurbed dell u2412m for $200.
not.too.shabby. -
The 30% off coupon code for refurbs at the Dell Outlet is yielding some pretty nice deals. I'm absolutely drooling over the U2713HM for $418, which is like Korean monitor pricing for a 27'' 2560x1440 S-IPS, except it's a Dell which means much higher build quality and stand, an actual OSD, and more connectivity options. AnandTech's review gave it high marks and apparently it's one of the few that has a great factory calibration. Since I work with a lot of content creation programs and PhotoShop this is just about my dream display. Even at $400 it's actually quite affordable relative to other large, pro-level monitors. Too bad I just can't afford it at the moment. I blame the Steam Summer Sale. -

just a few days til i move up from my 15" to the u2412m
can't wait. never used a monitor bigger than a 15". -
it is absolutelyf'ingbeautiful.

See, bargain basements can be a good thing sometimes.
