I'm looking to purchase a mouse for my laptop to use when I'm gaming (Strictly FPS's). I'm by no means a hardcore gamer but would like a quality mouse for the times that I do. I looking to spend no more than $35 but would go to $40 if I had to. Doesn't matter if its wireless or wired. Needs Vista compatibility. Preferably I would like it to be a claw grip design because the palm grip mice seem to hurt my wrist. Any ideas?

Let me direct you my friend to the ESR ESReality MouseScore 2007.

    http://www.esreality.com/?a=post&id=1265679

The answer to your question is the Logitech mx518 - save for the old mx500 overclocked to 1000Hz and almost unavailable atm - the best gaming mouse that can be bought.

    No questions. Really.

    Or, to put it graphically.

MX518 is the ONLY gaming mouse in my mind. Great DPI, durability, and TONS of buttons to customize.
For COD4, I have Air support, stun nade, and nade launcher mapped to the top buttons with voice chat and melee on the side buttons.

The Razer you found would be a good choice. Another one would be Microsoft's Intellimouse Explorer 3.0 which is still to this day regarded by gamers as one of the best gaming mice.

Mx518 best mouse I ever used and I own the more expensive G7 for my laptop, and have used the newer G5's too and still my 518 is the best feeling one, perfect form, shape, weight, great performance, its cheap, and its like 3 years old and still in brand new condition.

I own two 518 after trying the G5 and all the Razers, which I was not satisfied with. I have seen the 518 down to 19.99 after rebates or sales and such, and until another mouse can prove itself as this one has, I am sticking.

That ESReality graph is the old one without the Deathadder added (I think) as I remember glazing over it when I was mouse shopping. Anyhoo...

The MX518 is a great mouse, I owned it before the Deathadder. Aside from being a good mouse it has fantastic on the fly DPI switching, but this feature is basically useless IMO for gaming. No way I can switch DPI back and forth and do all the other things I have to do in a fast paced FPS. But the feature is great for Photoshop and other design programs when you have a high-res screen, whiz around at high DPI settings and need to be more accurate with touch ups and stuff.

What you want in a mouse is something that feels good to you, has well placed thumb button(s) (I recommend setting one to grenades or fast weapon switching) and the rest is muda.

On a budget the Intellimouse 3 is a great choice. Razer mice seem to have a love it/hate it following so be sure it's the right fit for you before you order.

Odd, I claw grip my MX518 just fine. It just so happens the mouse is big enough to fit in my palm so it looks like a palm grip. But I use the same grip with my tiny Dell bluetooth mouse and that's when I know my grip definitely looks like a claw grip.

Intelli 3.0 is between deathadder and MX518. but intelli 3.0 has pathetic Driver software .

Yup that's why I went Deathadder. I originally bought the MX518 as no Deathadders were available at the time. But a few months later I "upgraded" and have never looked back.

I used to use MS mice the old intellipoint v3.0 and let me tell you it's not worth using microsoft stuff because it's cheaper. I'd rather pay a bit more for logitech. The intellimouse was sold based on its "ergonomically friendly" design. It has 5 buttons (which was a big deal back then) and so I bought it. After using it for around 3 years I started to get wrist pain. The mice had caused a minor carpal tunnel syndrome. I was advised by my doctor to use a different mice and I went for logitech G5. It's been a year now since I've bought my G5 and I haven't had wrist pain since. The mice is smooth and the lazer is really nice. If you can't afford G5 (which is relatively cheap for performance) then go for MX518. Anything is better than Microsoft!

thanks everyone... so i've narrowed it down to the razer diamondback for $30 shipped (deal at dell for $25 expired last night) or the mx518 for $35 shipped. So what does everyone think? go for the mx518 or save five bucks and get the diamondback?

the new Diamondback 3g has better sensor ..its a 3G IR sensor instead of Mx518's LED based.

which means Diamondback will track better on MORE surfaces.

and it has 1000Hz polling rate which i am not sure if MX518 driver yet has.

but both have same 1800 DPI.

Personally i like Mx518 over Diamondback because MX518 has better design and its bigger for my large palms.

so now its upto u which u feel looks & feels better on your palm.

dont buy in a hurry because these Gaming mice dont get spoilt easily and u ll have to tolerate them for long long time.

518 is no contest, imho, for the diamondback. It has been one of the most widely accepted and professionally used (woop) mice for competition and such. Besides, it just works. From photoshop to cs to nfs, etc. it works wonders.

    Yup,

    but be careful.

    There are 2 versions..

the older diamondback has OLD sensor which u shouldnt buy.

the new updated Diamondback 3G has 3G IR sensor.

    so buy Diamondback 3G

I can't change the polling rate 125 hz. to 1000 hz. in diamondback 3G in vista sp1.

It is not possible that Razer has no solution at its new mouse. Even in his old deathAdder have overclocking for the polling rate in driver, but Diamondback, NOOOOOO. I use usbport.sys Russians, but no longer work for Vista sp1 x64.

    Any help?.

    P.S.: Sorry my english.
