Ok, maybe it doesn't have to be bullet proof. I am going to Afghanistan in a few weeks and want to get a hard case for my inspiron 1720 (ordered, in the mail). Nice to haves would be one that could also fit the extra battery, charger, mouse and external HDD. But it can't be too big. I am going to have to carry it around. The main thing is it needs to be sturdy. My last dell got squished in Iraq, left a thick line across the screen.

Other considerations are securing it. I will be moving around the country a bit, and I can't watch it the whole time. I have looked at kensington locks, but with that I would need to leave the case open for the cable to run through. I guess I would lock it to my cot...

Thanks for any advice. Here are the cases I am currently considering...

The Pelican one would be PERFECT for me, but at $200 it is out of my price range. $100 is a pretty big stretch for me. I also don't care too much how it looks, in fact shiny silver will have to be painted matt black.

Get a case with a lock then secure the case with a cable lock :p (dont have to keep it open).

If you cant find a good hard case, then get a normal briefcase and use the notebook with a sleeve (for extra protection).

Maybe the bullet might not penetrate the bag, but I seriously doubt that a laptop would survive undamaged after getting shot . IMO the impact would be too much for a bag like that to handle.

i have an oakley bag that's made of materials like that. It isn't actually bulletproof, it's just really tough. When they give you the sales pitch at the store they stab the bag, pull on the fibers and show that they go back to normal. It's nice if you've ever gotten a "snag" on your bag while traveling, but it isn't going to offer up any extra protection for your laptop.

Edit: Cavscout, I second the choice on the Pelican. $129 on Amazon.

Get the Pelican case. You cannot go wrong with them. Watertight and airtight. I have had one for many years (for my camera) and after taking it on a boat that got swamped and the camera was bone dry i was very happy with it.
Being in the Sand, it will keep your laptop clean at least when it is in the case, and if you drop it, it still should be fine.
