It seems with the popularity of microSD cards they are now about the same price as standard SD cards for the same capacity.
The microSD has the advantage of being able to be used in both SD and microSD devices.
Is there any major disadvantage over buying a microSD instead of an SD to use in a camera that requires SD ?

As long as the speed is the same (Class __), there's no disadvantage.

It's just one more potential thing to go wrong. In my experience, SD cards are finicky enough; they tend to "die" and lose all my photos or whatever's on them after a few hundred transfers between my camera and PC, usually barely a year after I buy them. With a micro SD, you have not only the card itself, but the full size SD adapter to worry about as well.

Maybe I'm just unlucky...but I've had three 2GB SD cards for my camera in the last few years, all from different brands and classes from 4 to 10, and after a while, during the process of transferring photos from my camera to my PC, the thing will suddenly start being really slow, and photos will appear with half of them covered in gray, and some will be deleted altogether, and then Windows will ask me to format the card the next time I plug it in. I've lost easily thousands of photos.

Main disadvantage of microSD:

as Mastershroom said, you have to worry about the adapter malfunctioning as well (read: dust getting or something that makes the contacts of both things stop contacting)
Class x isn't really standardized either
that saying, i do use my MicroSDs as SD cards... don't see any problems so far. -

actually full sized SD's are much less expensive and have better performance then micro sd's. you can't find any micro SD capable of +22MB/s. You have SD's capable of 95MB/s
the question of is it really worth the money depends on the use. many professional photographers like me pay premium for the speed and it's worth it. My camera doesn't see any better performance over 35mb/s, having a 35mb/s or 50mb/s or 95mb/s it's the same for the camera, it won't perform any better.
BUT
just image if you have 4x 16gb cards and do 4 shoots a day over 200days. If I save, let's say 1minute per card, I'll 4minutes X 4 per day X 200 days = 3200 minutes that's about 53 hours. I earn 40$ an hour. 40$*53days= $2120.
It's really worth it for me. love my delkins 633x. -
most ebay micro SDs are black/ink topped counter fits when my 16gb died after a year or 2 it had been getting hot and the ink started flaking off. it worked fine for a long time.
