when you say portable do you mean wireless?
if so I would recommand the Logitech VX nano or its successor the Anywhere MX.

If those two are too "over-priced" for you I can recommand the Wireless Mouse M510 or the Marathon M705.

The Marathon is almost fullsize and will provide the best gaming experience.

If you don't mean wireless by saying portable, go with the Logitech G5 or MX 518.

Yeah I'm a sucker for Logitech.

Yea, I'm using Logitech M510 together with K250 (using 1 wireless unifying receiver for both). And the mouse is really good, it uses high performance laser (batteries will last for about 18 months - 2xAA).

I'll second this. The VX Nano is the best mouse I ever used. I use it for all my laptops and desktop setups. But it sure isn't cheap. :)

Any wireless mouse with a 'center' button that is not a track roller only should be fine.

I have a Logitech M305 which is a sweet little low cost mouse, but you can't use it for gaming for the obvious reasons.

If one should buy a Logitech mouse then consider the Unifying models.

I would gravitate towards the Logitech Marathon M705, but I've never used one.

    Yeh i would prefer wired

I'm liking the anywhere MX and would even be willing to go ahead and spend the $100 on it from ebay. would it be worth saving the $40 odd and get the Logitech VX nano? is there much difference?

... but then again what about Razer | For Gamers. By Gamers.? | Online Store - Razer Orochi? Bluetooth Notebook Gaming Mouse
if im going to spend the money anyway...

    I've loved this little one:

    Microsoft Wireless Mobile Mouse 6000

It uses BlueTrack technology, so it'll work on almost ANY surface. Hell, I've used it on my pant leg before and it works great.

If you are looking for portable I have one of these and like it:

    Microsoft 3000

On the topic of mice, I recently bought 2 Logitech g9x mice with the special they had for $39.99 shipped each. It's a really nice mouse for that price. My only complaint is I seem to like it best without a shell and there is no way to use the side buttons without. I may mode it.

I had (have) a Microsoft notebook 5000 bluetooth thing which is good but sucked at games.

So I now have a Logitech Anywhere MX which is much better, also got a wireless keyboard (for full gaming when away) that uses the same Logitech wireless usb thing.

Hmmm thanks for the suggestions - lots to think about..

I guess im still drawn to the Razer | For Gamers. By Gamers.? | Online Store - Razer Orochi? Bluetooth Notebook Gaming Mouse now that i've become more willing to spend more $$ on it.. (~$100 off of ebay new and sealed, $120 from Razer)

only thing that worries me about it is the 3-second automatic sleep mode which can cause lag after waking it up.. that and i'm unsure whether it would be suitable without a mousepad because getting a mousepad out and setup is a bit annoying.. anyone know anything about this mouse? good/ok/terrible?

the anywhere mx seems pretty good in terms of portability and the fact it can play on anything... only thing is it just doesn't look like a $150 mouse and that is a little tooo expensive

Razer Orochi all the way. Love mine, it's the perfect M11x accessory. You can usually find it online for around $65 now a days. In BT mode there is a tiny delay but they say not to use BT mode for gaming. I never really have an issue with it. But it does come with a USB cable to give you a performance from the mouse plugged in.

I use the Logitech M705 (39.99 on sale at best buy) and really enjoy it. Easy setup and works perfect.

Dude i got this one, (not made by apple even though the name makes you think so), its called an Ihome Fasttrack Laser Mouse, model ih-m126lr. I bought it case it was cheap and i have two gaming mice already. Its got changeable DPI settings with a button on the mouse. and so far after a month its been doing just fine. best thing it was 20 bucks here.

Microsoft Mobile Mouse 4000 is only $15 at your local staples/best buy and it is very ergonomic and compact. It uses a blue light so it is very accurate and is wireless. The battery runs out about every 3 weeks using it about 3 hours a day. It uses a USB connector.

I can easily recommend the logitech mx518, g5, or g500. All great mice. Currently on the G500 now, and if you are a plam grip mouse user as opposed to a claw grip user, they are a great size. The adjustable weights in the g5 and g500 give you a good level of customization while not going overboard (see - Cyborg R.A.T. 3/5/7/9)

I picked up a razer imperator mouse before my G500 and returned it. Not to say razer doesn't make great mice, but I found it much too light, and not quite suitable for a palm grip user. Also, a lot of mice these days use a phillips dual laser, which has been reported to have some tracking issues. I found my razer jumping location on my screen (not good for gaming :(...) Haven't had any issue with the g500, but some people complain about the button layout, and much prefer the second revision of the g5. Also the g5 has an acceptable DPI of 2000, where as a DPI of 5700 on the G500 is a little overkill.

The cyborg r.a.t. also uses this phillips dual laser which may lead to tracking issues. As well, some of the adjustable pieces are supposedly flimsy when extended too far.

Needless to say, the logitech g5/g500 are customizable, have great software, on the fly dpi change buttons, and do not use the reportedly glitchy dual laser.

Haha and that is why I want one.
This is a simpler one that my MW2 addicted friend (he gets nukes almost every game) uses. I tried it out and liked it a lot, but it's a bit too small for my hands. Someone else recommended it above and i second that rec.

The Orochi is definitely an awesome mouse. In Bluetooth mode, it's not great for gaming due to the inherently high latency and sleep mode, not to mention the 2,000 DPI limit. But it's awesome for "normal" mouse use, web browsing and all that, and it's extremely comfortable.

When you plug it in with the detachable cable, it's a whole different beast. 4,000 DPI and 1ms response just like any full-sized wired gaming mouse, and no sleep timeout.

I shall throw in a recommendation for the microsoft sidewinder X8. It is not a small mouse by any means but it is very comfortable and is wireless with a very long lasting battery. It is also a very solid and sturdy mouse when you grip it. It might not be the *most* portable but I would dare to say it is one of the stronger ones. And after all of my quality problems with razer mice I can never recommend one again.
