Can anyone suggest a good wireless router for under $50?

our current belkin craps out constantly for no apparent reason. Load a page with 5 pictures? It stops completely and I have to unplug it for a minute

i have a refurbished Netgear WNR834B.... works so far for draft-N in my dorm room

the thing is, look for one that is compatible with DD-WRT (or Tomato)... its much stable and more features than any other firmware u get....

go to slickdeals.net and set up a deal alert for wireless routers.... i waited a few weeks to snatch that $25 refurb from frys.com

I have never had positive experiences with Belkin hardware, and Netgear is a bit shady in my experience as well.

    I'd check out Linksys.

The linksys WRT-54G is one of the best out there. Ive been using it for 3 years no problem what so ever.

I'd recommend Linksys along with Greg. It's been the most reliable in my experiences, and will run like a work horse for years to come. It's a great company of routers, and are good quality for the money. +1 for Linksys. ;)

I like the older LInksys WRT54G more than the current ones unless you're talking about the WRT54GL. I only like those because it's possible to put DDWRT on them which allows many more features.

If you don't mind spending a few more dollars, Buffalo routers are really nice too. I have a WHR-HP-G54 with DDWRT on it.

Linksys WRT54GL + DD-WRT... been working great for me for a few years. It might be slightly more than 50 bucks though.

Another vote for an older WRT54G with Tomato, DDWRT etc. I have an old WRT54GS with a ton of memory running Tomato. Works great! :D

The WRT54G is almost legendary because of DDWRT, Tomato, and other 3rd party firmware. I wish they would really update it with GBE though. That's really the only thing that I would say is missing from it. Netgear recently came out with an open source router very similar to the WRT54G, but it doesn't really improve on it and it sells for about the same price.

For something as old and sells as well as the WRT54G(L), I can see why they wouldn't bother updating it with GBE though.

I have a WRT54GL myself, picked it up for the same price as a 54G. Havent had the time put DDWRT on it though, might adventure into that at some point. :D But with standard linksys firmware, its been working great anyway.
