I'm looking for a new display (I'm currently using a woefully outdated 20in flat CRT I bought in 2002). I'm looking for something with built in speakers, but I have concerns about cabling.
Would I need to plug in HDMI and traditional audio cables, or do most monitors with attached speakers support audio over HDMI (or DisplayPort) as well?
Also any suggestions would be appreciated. Looking for something in the neighborhood of 24in with a nice viewing angle and picture quality - have plenty of cash to spend on it.

The HDMI was created to be the solution to the multi-cable madness. It contains both high quality audio and video in one.
Still, you should try and find external speaks. Even a $100 pair would be significantly better than those built-in most monitors. Especially since separation is half of what it take to make a more enjoyable audio experience. -
I know HDMI is capable of transmitting audio, I use it every day.
I'm asking if most monitors with built in speakers support audio over HDMI, as I see many with standard audio-in ports on them as well. -
You can choose to use either/or depending on your other audio equipment setup. A variety of ports just allow you more flexibility. -
The monitor I've used that had built in speakers did support audio over HDMI. I would double check for every monitor you're looking at, but in general audio over HDMI does seem to be supported.

Yes. But you would need 5 to 7 monitors for the full surround experience over HDMI.
I kid. -
i have no experience on the display port part, but HDMI will carry HD audio and video. the other audio jack is probably just an audio out for external speakers or headphones.
i'm pretty sure u'd want to have your computer process the sound anyways, if u are using external speakers or headphones. the extra ports are just there for flexibility.
Can monitors with built in speakers pull audio from DP-in or HDMI-in?
