    Hey everyone,

I am looking for some help with finding a good/decent fm modulator for my car. I need it to plug into the usual cig lighter port and have a 3.5mm connection. I have a Slacker on order and want to try out using my EEE as well, just for kicks. I have read about a couple and Belkin seems to be popular, but definitely some awful reviews floating around about them. I think I would be willing to pay for something a bit better, any suggestions? I live in Southern California, SG Valley area, so it is kind of cluttered. I am sure I can find one number to broadcast on, just need figure out what to use. Thanks for your time.

i bought the one with the least bad reviews (cant remember the name) and was sorely dissapointed. the quality was, frankly, ****e. even when it wasnt hissing, buzzing or getting cut over, it lost a huge amount of detail. my area wasnt even all that cluttered.
then again my sister thought it was fantastic and couldnt hear the poor quality of it. then again she's 22 and still listens to music out her phone...

so instead i spent £110 on a new car stereo (pioneer head unit) fitted it and plugged my ipod into that. then spent £90 on front speakers, then about a year later added a sub and 2 amps. then went to uni and ran out of cash. sounds good though. trust me, fit a new stereo with an AUX in, or get someone to fit one for you. those FM things are a complete waste of money.

none are good. i had several they all stunk. I ended up doing what roosta did and redid the car audio. spent about 800 on head unit, speakers, subs etc and the head unit has a 3.5mm jack in the front. i use it with my zune now.

Repeated for effect. Wireless FM transmitters are TERRIBLE. If you can access your antenna plug on your radio you can plug in an inline FM modulator (similar idea, except no wireless so the sound is better). This is the setup that I have in my car because I cannot remove my radio without losing climate control. The best way to do it though is to use a radio that was designed to accept a 3.5mm plug.

Hmm. I am all over replacing my head unit...but my parents, the owner of my truck, refuse to let me mess with it. I will win soon, this summer to be exact :) That inline seems like a temporary fix for me. I have a Ranger with external antenna, so shouldn't be too difficult. Tabbed, could you point me in that direction? Thank you all for your help.

You're going to need something like this: link

It's not that hard to install, I did my car in about an hour... you just need access to a 12v line (I used a cigarette lighter) and just wired it up. Minimal amount of modding required, and it's nothing that you will be able to tell once you remove it... or hell, just leave the wiring tucked up inside, no one will know.

    EDIT
Actually that one is a little different than mine. I don't have an external switch or a 3.5mm female plug like the one I linked to... and I think that one (linked one) is a better design.

I have a cheap unbranded FM transmitter, it does a decent job. Not as clear as playing a CD, but comparable to a FM radio station. Only few FM stations are there in my area, could be why it works ok for me.

That link above is wrong. You'll want something like THIS. I'm sorry
