I need to find a fairly cheap webcam for my mother-in-law to use for Skype, and since it is for Christmas use, it needs to be something that any big box retailer would carry. She has a 4-year old Dell consumer laptop running Vista 32-bit and a cellular modem. She has medium to low lighting in her house.
I've looked at the Dynex DXWEB-1C (a Creative model sold at Best Buy apparently) and the Creative Live IM. Comments on these or alternatives are welcome.
She has a Logitech, but it is giving her grief (horrible static instead of voice when she uses the built-in mic with video: it can work as a mic with no video or a webcam without sound, but running both will not work for her).
Thanks for your help.

Yeah, if she's on dial-up the video nor audio is gonna look/sound too good.
Forget about an HD webcam...I have the following and it works well enough for me.

I bought Logitech C310 from eBay for $30. It works great and can record HD 720p video. Check it out. If the connection is slow, simply lower the resolution. On that note, I simply don't see how the video chat (unless the image is a size of my avatar) will ever work across a dial-up connection (its what 56k?).

I think she's on a 3G network.
