I wanted to replace my massive HP IR receiver, combined with old Sony remote which I use to control my PC, TV and Audio System, with something more compact. So I grabbed a suitable receiver (sold with remote) on eBay for AU$4.39, which equaled $3.36, in hope to use it with my Sony remote. I would prefer a nano usb IR dongle, but they don't seem to exist. Another option I considered was Flirc, but it's not nano anyway and costs x8 times more with shipping.

I tested this remote+receiver both with my notebook, my mobile phone (docked to HD Station), and my Raspberry Pi2. They are recognized as hid device, i.e. keyboard+mouse combo, and work pretty well. Retractable cord design is a good thing for an IR device of such size, much better than big dongle. Mouse control over IR surprised me not being bad, though it would have been even better if mouse pointing joystick was clickable. Text input is uncomfortable a disaster.
The major problem is that I don't know how to force it to recognize my Sony remote IR signals and assign actions on them in EventGhost. Receiver on PC Remote Control plugin photo in EventGhost looks identical, but the plugin doesn't work. On the other hand, given the price I paid, I am not disappointed, and will use this combo somewhere else - unless I figure a way to couple it with my Sony remote, that is. I purchased it here.
