Looks good, I have had Samsung laser printers before with no issues
You can find toner kits that drastically decrease the price of toner cartridges
My first was a Brother and its still working fine

Technically that request is an oxymoron, since laser printers are much more expensive when compared to their inkjet brethren. In my research the Samsung brands did not come up; and none of the recommended models were under $300.

Brother 2170W - solid, reliable, networked and cheap! I use it @ home for all my printing.

Laser printers=cost more in purchasing but ink is cheaper then inkjet.
never buy a sub $200 Laser printer.. You'd be better off buying a cheap inkjet.

inkjet's are cheaper in purchasing, but very expensive in the ink department.

^^ if you dont need color, cheap laser is fine

me: college student, sharing printer with 3 roommates, used close to 4000 pages since last year September

got a refurb Brother HL-2140 for $30 after rebate/coupon(it says OOS, but it'll come back)

starter toner + Toner trick = 800 pages

3rd party 2800pg extended toner for $15 each. Got 4 to finish the rated 10,000 drum life

print quailty pretty decent, enough for any school work/papers. Paper itself, usually I get free after rebate from staples

    total cost - $30 printer + $15*4 toner + free paper = $90 for 10,000 pages

1 cent per page or better

(you can get the network capable sibling 2170W for $20 more, but I have a USB print-router)

Honestly, all cheap laser printers are the same. They are all cheap, come with toner cartridges that are 1/2 full, and make their money by selling you toner cartridge replacements. It's the same reason why inkjet printers are cheap, why Gilette razor handles are cheap, and why video game consoles sell for a loss on the hardware.

I've owned cheap Samsung printers before, I've owned cheap Brother printers before. They work fine, they do their job. And at some point, they break down. When that happens, it's usually cheaper to throw them out and buy a new one than to repair it.

So, just buy whichever one you want. If you can't decide, flip a coin. It's not really going to make that much of a difference.

NO! That's just bad advice. Printers like all other consumer products have pros and cons to them. You just have to do your homework to find the one that's best for your purposes.

well, the brother is what I have (and a lot of what other people who want/buy cheap lasers get), and I am pretty happy with it... just posting my experiences on a certain laser model/brand

and its OOS, so if you want it right now, you either have to pay a lot more for a brand new Brother, or get the cheaper Samsung... go find out what is the drum life, how much the toner replacements cost, whether you can stretch the toner cartridge(as i said, the brother hl2140 has the sticker trick to stretch toner usage)

In most cases, yes, it makes sense to do your homework. But we're talking about $50 laser printers here... they are pretty much a commodity. They all have similar performance, features, reliability, and price. Use it for what you need. And when it breaks down, throw it away. You're not going to really find much of a difference.

So if you won't find much of a difference, my thinking is "Why spend time doing research on a commodity product?"

In that case, no. I would not research a $50 product. I already know a $50 laser printer is a hunk of junk.

:( My $50 Brother HL-2040 (4 years old) is nearly through its second cartridge and going strong. Thought it would be dead by now, but it doesn't even jam on me (yet). Laser printers are sold on a gillette model just as much as inkjets. My toners carts are 35-ish and haven't budged. Higher priced printers will get you more features, but all I do is print text documents, so features would be a waste.

I have just bought Brother HL 2140 for 67 bucks shipping included. Works great and very fast. It's starter toner is supposedly can print 1000 pages. But you can extend it to twice of that if you cover the sensor of the cartridge. Do a search at YouTube for brother toner sensor or something like that.
