Just looking for suggestions for a cheap wireless printer so that I don't have to have a wired printer cluttering some part of my desk near my laptop and so that my roommate can use it without bothering me.

I am just looking for basic printing, really just for printing essays and other work every once in a while.

I was looking at this since it's on discount atm.

I think the features are nice, especially duplex printing. It's also got good reviews, but it might be overkill for me. Also a little bulky since it is so good.

    what features you need?

    -color
    -duplex
    -wireless
    -speed?

i'm a college student, got a HL2140 (the 2170W without the ethernet/wireless capability) from staples refurbished for $30.00 after rebate...

had a inkjet, was too crappy(slow printing time, expensive ink)

got the laser, the 23ppm printing was nice, (manual) duplex if you want to, the lack of color wasn't a problem

cost of printing on a laser for me: less than a cent per page if you use 3rd party toner, free paper from staples etc

find some staples coupon to make it cheap(like mine :)

More love for cheap brother laser printers - I have a cheap Brother HL-2040 that cost me $50 when I bought it ~3 years ago. I went through the starter cartridge (1000 pages) and got a remanufactured replacement toner cartridge for about $20 a year ago that's had no problems thus far. It should last about 2500 pages (in theory, so a per page cost of under $0.01.

Cost per page is way more important than the cost of the printer itself. If you expect to print over 3000 pages or so, laser always wins in TCO. Inkjet cost per page runs roughly 10-25 cents or so for black - color.

Of course, I do have color printing needs. My setup is to leave the color printer disconnected until i actually need color and print everything else off the laser. The laser sits on the floor under the desk and makes a nice footrest since it's built like a tank.

As far as AIOs, I hate them with a passion. My color printer is an AIO with a bad scanner. What a waste. Went back to using my old trusty Canon LiDE 30 - not quite built like a tank, but it's thin and light and easy to toss on top of my bookcase.

Canon in general are among the most highly rated printers with cheap inks. Can't speak on that particular model though; I've read too many articles to remember them all.

    +1 for Brother laser printers.
I have a HL-2170W I bought about a year ago and I'm still on the starter toner (~800 pages). No issues.

+1 for Brother 2170W, I've had the Brother HL 21040 and now upgraded to the 2170W. Both great printers with no problems.

Yep. The 2140 occasionally goes on sale for around $50. I buy an extra one at that point for the drum and toner.

They're identical aside from the swapped colors and wifi on the 2170W.

Dang I don't know. I already have an HP printer/scanner/copier and I buy cheap third party ink.

I like the Canon for its features. but laser printer would be cheaper per page... but I already get cheap ink for my HP.
