I need some cheap speakers to use when my laptop is running connected to my external peripherals. I usually use good quality headphones, but sometimes I like to demo music for others. I don't want to spend more than £15/$30. I have looked at the following:
Sony SRS-Z30 (£35)

Sony SRS-A021 (£21)

Creative Inspire 280 (£15)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creative-La...B000BVAPC6/ref=pd_rhf_p_7/026-7744166-6024451
Logitech S100 (£5)
http://www.amazon.co.uk/Logitech-97...B0007SQKEA/ref=pd_rhf_p_5/026-7744166-6024451
Creative Gigaworks T20 (£50)

Yes, I know almost all of those are above £15, but they are things I have been looking at !
The S100's at £5 can't really go wrong with those can I? Well yes, if they are worse than my laptops speakers it rather defeats the purpose.
Any advice?

I've listened to music on the Sony SRS-A021, and those were pretty good. The Logitech S100 that you mention are also good for that price.

Logitech X230 are fantastic speakers for the price. The sound quality is above par. alhough they are on the higher end of your budget. combine it w/ google checkout, and you are down to 25USD. you definately won't regret buying these

Hope this helps -
AT the 30$ price range, they are all pretty much the same. Look for high watts RMS , I guess.

here is what I did for my office speakers. I found a used stereo system at, what for you would be a car boot sale (we call those a "swap meet" or "flea market") or even visit a local charity shop. But I got a nice used sony book shelf stereo for US$20 then bought a small FM broadcast dongle for the laptop...now I can wander through the whole house and have music or whatever played via any stereo in the house. Plus the stereo's all have cd players of their own if I am in that mood.
And to get a bit better sound quality you canalways run a cable from the laptop to an RCA adapter on the stereo...
No matter, I was in the same position I suspect you are in of not wanting anything special, just something to make noise. Now I get much better sound then I could from buying the el cheapo speakers alone -

Some good suggestions here. I am somewhat of an audiophile, on a student budget. For this reason I have invested my money in headphones of various types, and I pretty knowledgeable in that area. When it comes to speakers, I am somewhat of a novice. The last speakers I had were a 2.1 set but I am not keen on the complications and booming tone of the subwoofer.
When I am at home I often connect the laptop to the main stereo or my bedroom system with 3.5mm>RCA which works okay (though I cannot as yet remove the fan noise!).
My newest scheme was to buy a 1GB thumbdrive which I connect to my DVD player which is connected to the 5.1 surround & stereo system downstairs. This works pretty well since it cuts the laptop out of things completely.
Nevertheless the issue remains that sometimes I want to listen to something without headphones (they can get fatiguing). It would mainly be at low volumes, since I don't like disturbing the neighbours.
If they did those Logitech X-230 without the subwoofer, it would be pretty good.
Jetstar: are the Sony A021's with the extra over the S100? -
Yes. I think they are worth the extra money. I haven't listened to the S100's, but from my experience with the A021's, I am willing to bet that they would sound better.

Could you tell me a little bit more about the A021's? Anything worth noting (ie, particularly strong/weak areas).
-
I cannot offer anything more specific. I listened to them at a friend's place. As far as quality is concerned, they look pretty solid.
