Over the last week, I have been buying so accessories for the Macbook I'm buying before I head off to College (Aug 31). Big Lots is selling a Laptop safe for a bargain price of $40. Is the new Kensington lock still worth it? Should I also pick up Lojack which is significantly more expensive for Macs?

I never understood what those small safes are for. They're small enough and light enough for a person or two to easily carry away. And then afterwards they can figure out how to open it or cut it open. I think it just makes it easier for thieves to come in and carry away all your valuable stuff easily.

The point is to make it harder. Also, if the safe is of a very similar size to the laptop then it would be hard to cut it without destroying the laptop itself.

For $40 it sounds like a good deal, google is showing others at $200-400, the problem is: are you actually going to store it inside the safe? You should 100% pick up one of the laptop locks.

As for LoJack? I can't really give you to much advice other then look at their policies. When I looked at it they had an offer of $1,000 replacement if it was stolen, but that was really a $1,000 limit which got lower every year and ended after 3 years. Since it costs something like $200 I figured it was a waste because at best a $1,500 laptop would be exchanged for $800. If it was stolen in the second or third years then it would have only returned a few hundred dollars.

I plan to keep it in the safe when I head out of the room for long periods of time. I'd probally put the safe in a box or clothing container inside my room. Hopefully that helps. By the way the safe comes with a cable that can attach to a stationary object.

dont get a lock. they are too pricy and dont offer protection.

    my favorite vid of this.

ive been looking at lojack for a while, getting a year licence of premium when i get a new laptop (my current one is worth like...25 cents....).

but yeah, i think a safe would be good. lol. attach it to a metal chain to your wall. :D

now for fun. attach a security system to the safe that takes a code, if the code isnt deactivated and soemone touches it they get 30 amps of electricity streaming into their body (i think thats enough to kill them) or an anvil hanging above the laptop safe so if someone tries to steal it they get hit on the head! whoo!. im not insane.

btw, if you take my last suggestion you wont need lojack. though you may be charged for murder....hmmm...ask your lawyer if its ok to electrocute theives.
