Most of that is because the weight (despite the fact it isn't much) is only on one side. I try to avoid bags that force you to do that too much.
Backpacks are the way to go for me though...especially for those LONG hard days on campus. Even more important since I will now be living OFF campus and can't take a quick trip back to the dorm.

eh i'll sacrifice my shoulders for trendy consumerism. Also, the weatherproofness of the tarp liner of my bag is very much appreciated and cant be found on any backpack. but i sometimes wish i had gotten the 2 strap version...

Myself, I can't stand to use a backpack. It takes too long to wear and it's uncomfortable to have to adjust the strap length several times a day: when it's very cold outside, as it often is around here, you have to wear several layers of clothing, so the backpack "settings" that work above the winter coat will definitely be too loose over the sweatshirt that's underneath, and even worse so over the T-shirt that's under that. It doesn't help that I'm 6'3" and 295 lbs.
For that reason, and because I'm extremely mobile around campus, I just use a small, non-padded over-the-shoulder book bag and throw my ThinkPad in there too (with a Shinza sleevecase, obviously).

I got a free grey/black Kelty backpack back when I got my T40. Has a padded case inside for the laptop, so I just slide it in and velcro it shut. Plenty of room for books and other various items, and looks like a normal backpack. After so many years with backpacks I've become used to the weight and find all the extra space useful. Its easy to stay mobile on campus with them. I don't plan on switching to briefcase or "man-purse" type things anytime soon.

Even though I'm no longer a college student (I was one), I carry mine in a normal backpack with the notebook in a sleeve. I used to use those messenger type bags but I had to keep switching shoulders after a long bus ride to work.

I'm not in college yet, but I have a targus shoulder bag. I don't carry my notebook to many places though, so it's not used much. -

College students: how do you carry your laptop?
