Those of you with a single jack for both headphone and mic, are you able to get earphone mics to work?

I used a cheapo and a more expensive Klipsch (s3 I think) earphones with mics on my laptop (Asus N550 but I'm guessing this issue applies to integrated ports in general) and I cannot get the mic to work on calls using Skype, Goog hanghouts, etc.

I tried using the W8 sound recorder and it records very faintly. I also don't see a separate mic entry in the windows sound devices area; it's as if the mic is an extension of the built-in mic. Anyone found any workarounds? Thanks.
