    Hello all,

I'm looking to buy a new monitor to use for gaming, photo and video editing which will be attached to my laptop. Looking for a good HDMI based monitor that allow for the connection of the speakers to the monitor itself.

Furthermore, if I can get one that has USB ports so I can connect my lower end devices, such as keyboard, mouse, printer, etc. That would be great.

My budget is about $200 to $300 US. If anyone has any suggestions, would be most appreciated.

    Thanks a bunch.

I'd recommend either the Dell S2440l or Dell u2412m. The latter can be found for $300 if you wait for a sale.

The s2440l is AMVA based, so has higher contrast but poorer viewing angles. It's also glossy. It has HDMI, but no speakers or USB hub. It does have an audio out though. It's also cheaper at ~$200.

The u2412m is eIPS based, so it has very good color and viewing angles (I'm using one right now). It has a built in USB hub and is matte. It uses displayport as input, but it also takes DVI so you can use a HDMI->DVI converter. It also doesn't have speakers, but Dell sells attachable soundbars that you can use.

I would recommend the u2412m more for video and photo editing due to its better viewing angles and extra pixels. It suffices for gaming as well.

First off thanks for the suggestion guys.

    I have some questions,

With the Dell U2412M, if I got a DVI to HDMI cable, does that mean that I can plug in my external speakers to the monitor via an audio out or does it not have that option at all? Would I have to plug the speakers into the laptop whenever I connect it?

I've taken a look at the Dell S, the glossy is a bit of a turnoff as I have gotten accustomed to matte styled external monitor screens. But if you recommend it, I'm still seeing it as a candidate.

Please take a look at the current monitor I use at work for editing, thus far it works extremely well in my opinion. Amazon.com: Dell ST2421L 24-Inch Screen LED-lit Monitor: Electronics

Only problem I understand is that its getting a bit aged so I should consider something new.

Here is one of the options I am looking at based on the recommendation of a tech friend of mine,
    Asus VE248HL-TAA 24 Class Widescreen LED Backlit Monitor - 1920 x 1080, 16:9, 10000000:1 Dynamic, 2ms, HDMI, VGA, DVI-D, Built-in Speakers, Energy Star at TigerDirect.com
It has all but the extra usb port, that's alright, I can always get a hub for the laptop I think.

    Would appreciate your feedback.

    Many Thanks.

The u2412m doesn't have an audio out because there's no way to get audio in, so you will have to plug the speakers directly into your laptop.

Both the Asus monitor and your current Dell are TN Panel. Personally I would not use either for video/photo work. I've had TN panels so bad that an image looks different when you move it from the bottom to top of the screen. But if it's worked fine for you thus far then perhaps it'll work.

I should be receiving my Asus VS247H-P today. I got mine open boxed from NewEgg for just $140. A pretty good steal there but if you have the budget, I think the VS239H-P is a great buy.

I haven't had any problems with Asus monitors yet besides the need to do a bit of calibration out of the box to look its best.

The VS239H-P is an e-IPS like the u2312m, so it'll probably perform similarly. If you don't mind dropping an inch, it's probably pretty good bang/$.

If can afford to spend more, why not the ASUS PA248Q? It has everything you want, and you may be able to get it for about $300 if you wait for a sale.

Wow, this one is amazing. Does it have audio out? If so, this might be the one to get, and since its future proof, probably worth the extra cash.

The PB238Q is good as well, has everything I want as well and especially if I want to be conservative and ask myself 'would I really need a monitor with usb 3.0 ports and that extra inch'

What do you guys say about dropping from a 24" (which is said to be the sweet spot) to a 23 (which is an inch lower)?

The 24" is 16:10 and the 23" is 16:9, so that means the 24" has an extra 120 rows of pixels too. This also means that width wise they're about the same, but the 24" is 1.5" taller than the 23". If you have an aspect ratio preference then there's your answer.

Personally I think the extra 120 rows are nice, and that was enough for me to get the u2412m over the u2312hm. It's 11% more screen area and screen real estate, but almost 50% more cost. You'll have to decide for yourself whether that's worth it.

BTW 24" is about the minimum size that you can get more than 1920x1080 pixels, so that may be why people say it's a sweet spot.

Ended up pulling the trigger on the VS239H-P.

Thanks for all the assistance guys. I shall post my experiences on it once I receive it. :)
