I'm looking to buy a mouse and a mousepad. This is going to be my first gaming mouse.
I've decided to go for the DeathAdder, along with the Goliathus Fragged Omega mousepad. But the mousepad comes in 2 versions - Control and Speed.
I tried searching the difference and all I got was confusion, some people say control is more smooth and others say vice versa.
Please help me decide, which one to go for?
As for sensitivity, I'm not sure whether I'm a high sens user or low. But I play counter strike at sensitivity of around 6-7(scale of 1-20), with pointer settings in control panel set to max "fast".

Please recommend which one should I buy?
Also, is there any difference between the 3 versions of the DA? Normal, Dragon Age 2, and the Black Edition? Prices are same.

PS - I'm going to buy them online. That's fine, right?

It is fine to buy online, for the mouse all the editions have the same internals, only different looks. Get the one you like the most. For the mouse pad, no idea, to me it seems more like marketing since you can basically set the mouse options to what you like on any decent surface. Check if the people saying one is smoother than the other were using optical or laser sensors.

i own a razer vespula which is dual one side is control(ruff, kinda like sand paper, i would call it textured.... if that makes sense) and the other side speed(very smooth, almost like the mouse could glide on its own, to me it more responsive almost jerky so i use the control side since im more of a long range shooter).
i usually game at around 1600 to about 2000 dpi anything above that is way to jerky for me.....

I have the big-[word for beeehind redacted by NBR's filter] Goliathus in Speed and Control, and in the case of the giant mats, they're totally different.

The Speed is much more like the normal smooth fabric-fronted rubber mat that we all know, while the Control is a textured weave that's honestly more like a table placemat that you might find in a cheap restaurant than a mousemat. It's a much rougher texture and the mouse doesn't 'just glide' like the Speed. So the idea presumably is that by giving you more resistance against movement, you make more deliberate, controlled movements at the expense of twitch response.

I think it's unfortunately going to be one of those things you have to try out yourself to see if it works for you. But if you want a perfectly good default, I can't see anything wrong in going with Speed.

I have the Speed version and I recommend it.

As for the DeathAdder, the regular and DA2 versions are the same, while the Black Edition has a different surface coating. But they are all the exact same mouse, same sensor and everything.

Ive got the two XL razer pads (control & speed) next to each other and when i run my mouse across the two, the movements feels weird and unsmooth when it goes to the Control pad.

I prefer the Goliathus Speed since i play a lot of fast FPS games but thats my feel of things. Some like the added resistance.

if u like high sensitivity, twitchy, fast movements then go with a "speed" or smooth pad. if u prefer low sensitivity, more precise, "strokey" movements then go with a "control" or textured pad.

I have both and I must say i prefer the speed over the control. Speed does help in better mouse movement while control feels slightly restrictive compared to speed.

Hey, I forgot one thing. There's no problem in using the mousepad as a screen protector, right? I mean, when closing the lid, I'll keep the mousepad on the keyboard, since my m14x likes getting lines/scratches from dust on the keyboard/touchpad sides when the lid is closed.

Then its better you choose the speed edition, since the mousepad is quite thick. Also i feel that the textured version will wear down the mouse feet faster, especially if you are using the Deathadder, which has very small feet.

I dunno. It might be better to use something else completely different if you are really worried about that sort of thing as the mouse pad will surely pick up debris of its own...?

HANDS DOWN SPEED. me and a friend went 50/50 and he would get control and i would get speed, and we would try it side by side. i am SO glad i went with speed. trust me man, control istoo rough if you are ever going to consider playing an FPS game

that's horrible advice. speed or control is up to the user's preference. one might work for u, but not Bob, and vice versa. i couldn't imagine how much of a nightmare it would be for me to try to snipe someone while using a "speed" pad and high sensitivity...

best advice: go test them out yourself.

ps: i've had my Razer eXactmat for 3-4 years now. i haven't had any problems, what so ever, with any excessive wear on any of my mice's feet.

Speed pad + low sensitivity (around 15 inches for 360 degree rotation) is the best combo. ;)

I do have quite a bit of wear on the mats though. The Speed side response especially goes downhill quite quickly IMO through wear.

I found the speed side of a mousepad a LOT more than the control side, plus I found that over time the slightly abrasive nature of the control side both wore the feet down on my mouse faster, and ended up smoothing out itself because of the mouse wear. I have the metal razer one btw.

For a soft gaming mat, go for the speed edition, for all types of games.
