Just bought my son his first laptop and know from experience when he used mine he usually did so with the laptop on his lap or couch or cough, bed.

Since the intake air vents are on the bottom of his new laptop, what do you folks recommend that he uses when the laptop is not going to be used on a desk or flat surface which ensures proper air flow?

I have been giving him a big keyboard pad which he uses upside down since it has a wrist support.

Is there something actually made for this purpose which isn't very expensive?

Well, this is why people buy MacBooks:

For the rest of us, I spotted Targus Notebook Chill Mats at Staples B&M for $8. Cheap, frequently sells for $10 or less, and it's sized for a 14" notebook.

Of course, for something that's much more effective, and somewhat more expensive, you can always go for:

Newegg.com - Antec Notebook Cooling System (Black) Model NOTEBOOKCOOLER

Depends on the laptop. Both my Thinkpads have some vents on the bottom, but both still run cool even when using them directly on my lap.
