I will be buying a Dell XPS 15 with a 9 cell battery. This battery will give the laptop an elevation, allowing better heat flow below the laptop.

Question is, will that be enough to prevent overheating? Will adding a cooler to an elevated laptop be weird?

Well, even if you didn't have the 9-Cell battery, your laptop still probably wouldn't overheat. I don't know the extent of the cooling system in the notebooks though. The raised battery should suffice. However, if you feel you need a little extra 'help' a cooler would do a world of wonders!

That depends if you are going to be in an AC room or not. :p Outside temperatures aren't exactly cool by any means in Malaysia. :p So yeah, it really just depends on your ambient temp. If you are going to be using it then it's 33C outside, a notebook cooler isn't going to help either. But if you are using it in an AC room, you should be ok without a cooler. :)

I appreciate that you take my country into consideration, really. ;)

I'd usually turn on the AC if I have to use the laptop. But when I leave the laptop idle I would switch it off. No worries about an idle laptop overheating, right? Unless I put it under direct sunlight or something, haha.

Also, I don't know about Canada, but we have ceiling fans in basically every room here, including air-conditioned rooms. So maybe that could help?

Coolers are always the best way to go for Dell's. I remember I got one a few years ago for my Dell which would ALWAYS be burning when I touched it and it helped so much. Literally just picked up the cheapest one I could find at the store.

I use a cooler for my SXPS16 with a 9 cell. Still does the job well and actually allows the airflow to build up better with the extra space.

If you using it in an AC room that will be fine. Just make sure you open up the laptop to clean out the dust every couple of months. :)

Heh, I used to spend alot of time in Malaysia. :p Penang to be precise.

    Open up the laptop? :/

I hate to go off topic, but I must know, what's your business in Penang? :) They have the most amazing food there.

It's fairly straight forward with a service manual, the biggest cause for over heating is dust. You should give it a good clean every so often. :)

I went to Penang alot for holiday, since I was a kid (am from SE Asia). The food is great for sure! :D
