I've been looking at coolers for my Sony laptop, when it gets hot (from extended use, no gaming), it gets hot near the left Control, Shift, Caps Lock, etc key. The intake vent is on the bottom near the edge near those keys, and the hot air exhaust is on the side. Currently I put a deck of cards on each of the two back corners to elevate the laptop, getting some air on the bottom, but computer still gets hot after 3-4 hours of being on (even if no use).

Popular ones like the Zalman NC2000 and NZXT coolers have their fans in the center, which I don't think will do much good. Is there a cooler that will keep this laptop cool? And as always, cheaper is better.

There's always Cooler Master's Notepal U2/3, depending on the side of your laptop. The U2 comes with 2 fans and is for ~15.6s, the U3 comes with 3 fans and is for 17-18.

I can vouch for Notepal. I've owned U2 for my M14X and U3 for the M18X.... they provide good elevation for the laptop, but more importantly, you can position the fans where your laptop needs them to maximize its cooling ability. And both are quite affordable, too.
