I'm looking to purchase two coolers, one of an XPS1530 and one for the Vostro1700.

As far as I can tell, the Zalmon 2000 is what I'll be picking up for the Vostro 1700. I'm looking for something to be used on table tops full time, that's relatively light and biggest emphasis on quiet. Noise is by far the most important factor in my choice for the Vostro 1700, if there's something that would fit my needs for better than the Zalmon, please let me know.

I'm told the best thing to look for in a cooler is for the vents to align properly with the cooling area on the cooler. I've looked at pictures, tried to take measurements, and as far as I can tell, I _think_ the Zalmon 2000 should fit with the Vostro 1700. If anyone knows differently, please let me know. Also, there's a fan directly at the bottom of my Vostro in the vent. I have no idea if it pulls air in or out (gonna guess in). Does this conflict with any coolers? I have no idea if having two fans stacked on top of each other does anything to air flow that I might not necessarily want.

For the XPS1530, I'm looking for something that is going to be primarily used on a bed: i.e. it'll lie on the bed covers, not on my lap while sitting in bed. That's basically my only concern for this cooler, that it can be used comfortably on a bed. Since the machine is still being assembled, and not yet in my possession, I've not been able to check out which coolers would fit it correctly. Any help would be appreciated.

are you looking for a cheaper solution for the bed? do you actually need external air to keep the 1530 cool/er? if not, you could always use a tv tray or book or something.

since the intake part was mentioned, you could get a tv tray or equivalent and look @ the antec notebook cooler s or spire pacific breeze. the antec is slightly audible on low setting, but more audible on high setting. the spire pacific breeze is just loud.

I did read that. But that also says stuff like make sure the vents and cooler align, and that doesn't really end up telling me if the Notepal Infinite will end up being the best match for an XPS 1530. I did read the NBR review of the Notepal Infinite, but have not gotten around to the external reviews. If something mentioned in those, I haven't gotten around to it yet.

Nothing too intensive for now. Mostly generic stuff + lots of low-end gaming. Occassional image editing, but nothing overall that would specifically run the system hotter than normal usage. Only reason I'm looking at cooling solutions is because I'm simply obsessive compulsive around heat. And noise.

    To clarify:
Vostro for use on hard surfaces only. Looking at Zalmon 2000 for that. Noise matters on this machine the most.
XPS1530 for use on bed primarily. Definitely know not to use the Zalmon for that. Noise is of little concern so long as it's not a beast.

I'm not familiar with these styles of coolers. Looks like the Antec just covers the top end of the bottom of a the notebook and the Spire is attached directly to the back? How sturdy are they in use? Would it slip and slide or not stay on very well if a kid decided to run into the room and jump on the other side of the bed?

the back end of laptop sits on them and they blow cool air underneath your laptop. they're not as effective, but almost. yes, depending on the forces at hand, you're laptop would have a good chance of slipping off. get a tempurpedic mattress to combat this. :D

    Vostro 1700 = Zalman NC2000
    XPS 1530 = Notepal Infinite
