WD Passport 2.5'' 80GB. I've only had it for a couple weeks, but when I plug it in to either of my desktops I receive an error saying it cannot be recognized. When checking the status it says no driver is installed. Nothing else is working to allow me to view it. Can anyone assist me?

It worked fine for a week. I never dropped it or anything. When I plug it in it comes up as Unknown Device in Device Manager, but does not appear in My Computer.

That doesn't sound good at all. Do you have irreplaceable data on it? If you do, try to find a drive repair utility, and try it out. If not, the best thing to do is try to reformat it.

    Is it still under warranty?

Yes, it has a 5 year warranty with WD. I can use the WD Diagnostic software because my computer doesn't recognize the drive. I guess I will have to exchange it with the warranty.

Make sure you're plugging it into a USB port that has enough power going to your device because I had a similar issue with my MyBook and it simply wasn't receiving enough power (i used the wrong adapter lol).

i have a WD external USB-powered HD and read stories about the standard USB cables not supplying enough power so i bought a USB cable that takes power from two USB ports for when i use the hd on my laptop. works like a dream! mine was £0.01 from ebay (plus £3 P&P from hong kong). I think it's called a y-cable.

Good point, by external USB drive came with two USB connections standard, and it won't work right without both of them plugged in. This could very well be an issue with the Passport.

I just bought one and had a similar issue. My issue was resolved when I used the supplied (short) usb cable and plugged it directly into a USB slot and not into any type of hub, etc. Apparently the total distance from usb slot to HDD needs to be less than 22 inches to provide sufficient power for the drive.
