I've got an idea floating around in my head, let me try and explain what I want to do.

I have a pair of Bose Companion II speakers, as shown here:

Amazon.com: Bose Companion 2 Series II multimedia speaker system: Electronics: Reviews, Prices & more

Right now I'm just using the Bose speakers and they sound good, in my opinion, but could use a little more punch.

I've also got a relatively old subwoofer, it's just a black ported box with input from amp and to speakers, using speaker wire.

Now, I'm just a little bored around my dorm, I want to try and wire up the sub to the Bose speakers and then hook that up to my laptop. I think all I will need is:

3.5mm plug to speaker wire cable
    RCA to speaker wire cable

Would I use my laptop as the "amp", running the 3.5mm to speaker wire to the sub, and then speaker wire to RCA to the Bose speakers?

Is this a futile effort? Mostly I'm just trying to satisfy my curiosity.

Yeah the sub isn't powered. Oh well, thought it'd be worth a try.

    lol :D

Did you ever have an amp for that sub? If so I would think you would know that the big powerful amp can not be replicated by your little onboard soundcard or desktop soundcard.

All hope is not lost though, all you need is to get an amp to be between your signal and the speakers. A cheap amp from a pawn shop will do the job.

I have used CAR amps inside of the house before but its easier to go with a tried and true home audio receiver or dedicated amp.
