I was thinking of making a custom laptop cooler, but I am quite uneducated with wiring. Does anybody have a tut for making a laptop cooler?
Also I would like your opinion(s) on this fan. I will be buying three if I learn how to make a custom laptop cooler, but should I get a fan that sucks air or pushes it.

for that kind of money, get
Scythe Gentle Typhoons... one of the best rated fans out there... dual bearing and all...
and here's info on USB wiring...
a fan displaces air with use of the fan blade design... when air is displaced, there is negative pressure in the front end and positive pressure on the other end...
one thing is that you don't want the cooler fans to work against the laptop fans...
as for direction of air displacement, just flip the fan.
good luck. -
I was thinking of wiring it to 12V since the USB doesn't really give that much power (5V)
I'm also in Canada and don't want to deal with unknown dealers. -
but doesnt one have to take into consideration that some fans arent really designed to be place in a horizontal position?
by doing so, surely it will increase the wear n tear around the ball bearing thereby shortening its lifespan. This is why i opted to go with Scythe S-flex fans for my Cryo LX mod because their magnetic bearing system is not affected by vertical/horizontal placement. -
yea, Yates don't do well on it's back... but GT's are fine.. they are well made.
and OP, there's NCIX in canada... both of them are reputable dealers very well known to the watercooling PC community... -
Okay, but how would I be able to wire all this together.
-
That cooler master looks like a Y.S. Tech rebrand.
I would go for Delta fans for high performance fans. All of the brands like Yate Loon, Scythe, are all overhyped. They make very low quality fans, even if you want to call them fans.
In my books, there are only two good fan manufacturers, Delta and EBM Papst.
ebm's are very costly, so I try recommending Delta's
As per wiring, you need to look at the fans, if you have 12V fans, you should have two or three wires, (red, black and (white/blue/yellow for tachometer - optional))
You can use a USB port to have them running off the laptop, but that will only output 5V at 500mah, so you need to limit the fans you use to the power alloted by a USB port.
If you want them to run at say 9V or 12V, you can use an external power supply.
I buy most of my external power supplies from MPJA, they have a pretty good selection

Thanks for the info but which power supply should I get??? The fans I have picked are 12V.
I am going with the one I have picked because they look nice and many people have given it good ratings. -
If they use 4.2 watts each, than three fans means 12.6 watts.
You should have a 12V power supply rated for at least 1.5 amps if that is the case, that way you have some overhead, so it doesnt get too hot
This is a good power supply to use:
http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=16918+PS
All you need is a power cord for it,
it uses the same kind as a standard computer uses, the same as a CRT screen, etc.
If you need a cable, here is a link for one:
http://www.mpja.com/prodinfo.asp?number=7378+WI
To use, simply cut the jack off, and use a pair of wire strippers to expose the two copper wires.
Than simply wire them up,
One wire from the power supply will match the red on the fans, and the other will match the black.

Now how may I be able to get these in Canada?
-
DO NOT USB WIRE IT! The fan will run only at low speed so its not worth it then. Connect them to a power supply and short out the main green wire so it turns on without being plugged into a mobo as so.. http://aphnetworks.com/lounge/turn_on_psu_without_motherboard_the_paperclip_trick

You can try ebay, or craigslist
I do not know of any large electronic parts dealers in Canada
Try emailing MPJA, and see if they can place an order for you.
Chances are they can if you call them over the phone

Yeah, thanks munchkin I was already thinking of doing that
I don't really like shopping online for a store in another country.
I could go to a Computer Repair Store and ask them if they have anything. -
delta's are great but did you ever hear a delta at 12v?
might as well sit in front of your window AC and tube it to your lappy...
and again.. what are you cooling? we're still talking about a laptop, right? -
Yeah, we're still talking about my laptop
Just read what has been said and you'll know what we were talking about. -
i hear ya... but honestly... how much cfm do you need to cool your laptop?
is noise an issue?
a lot of these fans, even undervolted supplies enough airflow to cool a laptop...
delta and many others make great fans but still overkill imo.
even any desktop 120mm fans are overkill for a single laptop... anywhoo, you can also use a spare PSU from an old computer to power your fans... not so aesthetically pleasing in comparison to the other power supply...
but again, the question is... do you really need so much power going to your fans?
here's an interesting power supply to look at... -
Well, I play a lot of demanding games e.g Oblivion, GTAIV, and GMOD (With a lot of spawned stuff). I also play CS:S and Maplestory(sometimes when I am bored)
.
I will test my laptop's temperature when I play GTA IV, I have tested my temperatures when I have played GMOD though.
That power supply is quite expensive, plus I will have to pay shipping. My budget is approx. $120 +/- $10. -
Raidmax 380 psu from newegg costs $16. Works great and is small. I used 3 3000rpm rosewil fans also from newegg and when purchased at the same time, each is discounted to $5.
-
Why would I need a PSU in the first place?
Sorry if I am confusing you. -
A PSU is a cheap means of getting 12V and 5V power
However a power supply is large, and you cant really carry it around.
You are better off getting any 115V AC to 12VDC plug supply
All you need is about 1.5-3amps of power.
You can get a power supply at any decent electronics store. They are only like $10 at most
K-TRON -
Yeah, I prefer a plug, because I want to carry around the cooler alot.

Just made a thread about mine, check it out. Use it as a guideline.
