I purchased the Wenger Swiss Gear shoulder bag. I really like it, it's very sturdy. However I would like to beef up the protection since there is wiggle room inside the case.

I plan to construct a plastic case out of some sort of plastic, PVC/Lexan/Polycarbonate (the most likely choice). And line the inside with a polyurethane foam.

Has anyone has any experience with custom cases?

    Just get a notebook sleeve.

There are also hard (briefcase type) notebook cases; but those would be too big to fit inside a bagpack.

I plan to purchase a sleeve, but I was hoping to add some hard plastic protection as well as the padding. I guess I am a tad paranoid of my laptop being damaged.

The downside with plastic is that it will crack or chip or shatter that is why many cases are not made out of plastic

Just traveling, around town, general stuff. I am just afraid of that one catastrophic fall that wrecks my notebook.

Phoenix, aren't some plastics really tough, like polyurethane?

I've been reading about polycarbonate plastics. They seem to be fairly robust and not too difficult to work with.

I think if I made a polycarbonate shell with a lid with a thin .25" foam lining inside to secure the laptop clad in the Zeroshock sleeve I'd be well set.

I have an HP Pavillion DV9930. I have actually scratched my idea of a custom plastic box.

I am either going with a Pelican case+Zeroshock skin or a laptop backpack+skin, maybe not. My laptop is kind of big and I am having trouble finding a bag I like.

I was actually thinking I might go with a backpack now instead of a messenger bag or briefcase.

I agree with the above poster. The Pelican cases are real durable. if you have the money go for one of those.

That was what I was going to ask.

Axio have a range of hard sleeves, but they are pretty specific to crApples.

Pelicans are also really expensive and not really as strong as they are made out to be. I tested one of their smaller cases which was said to be crush proof. I ran over it with my big rig and the 12 tons crushed it flat. Pelican received an email back the next day, and they now state a weight limit :D

I made a laptop box out of 3/8" stainless steel. The liner weighs about 25lbs, but I know that it can hold up to the 12tons of my truck, and more.

Their is no limit to protection :D
