    Hey there,
I actually like this question..it intrigued me to go on a search, per se:

Gamer's tend to like the DPI...The higher the level in DPI..the better :D

Here is some info I found!
    Wiki is great! :D
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mouse_(computing)

    So:

Either way...that Wiki is a great read! :D
(I'm a tad mouse obsessed)

    Cin ;) :)

DPI is a matter of preference to most. Most likely your mouse has a button on it to toggle through each DPI setting. These types of Mouse are most commonly made for gamers who like a higher DPI.

DPI pretty mouch adjust the sensitivity of the mouse, the higher the DPI the more sensitive it gets.

But dont be fooled by the Numbers. theres no way anyone uses such high DPI, its way to sensitive to game.

Yeah especially that Razer Lachesis ...4000dpi rofl...thats the biggest gimmick in the world.

I play Counter Strike Source with my logitech G5 gaming mouse with:

    2000dpi @ 1.0 sensitivity.

Why? 2200 is fine for gaming.

I believe my mouses/mice have never had more than 800dpi - the computer games I played with that worked fine :D
    (Even a bluetooth mouse!!)

(Empire Earth 1 & 2, Age of Empires 3, World in Conflict)
But it has been a while.

I believe Cin answered your question well.

    One more thing:
A higher dpi should, logically consume more energy, i.e. battery powered mouse, or laptop ´on battery, lower dpi should make the battery last longer.
    (in theory)

Well, I've got the Cyber Snipa Stinger. Amazing mouse but at top CPI of 3200, its almost impossible to use ingame. A slight twist of the hand and you've turned around 360 degrees. Crazy.

1600~240 are comfortable settings to be at.
