Hello. I would like to know how to view my computer's screen on my TV. For instance, if I wanted to download an episode from a TV show or anime (legally) from a website and watch it on my TV, how would I go about doing that? Is it a simple matter of plugging a cable into the laptop and the TV and switching to the appropriate input on the TV?

The computer is an XPS M1730 and has inputs/outputs for DVI and S-Video. The TV is an HDTV with some HDMI inputs. Can anyone recommend a good DVI-to-HDMI cable if that is all I need?

    Never done this before, obviously.

Most hdtv's have a VGA in the back. Vga to vga and there you go.

EDIT: the M1730 doesn't even have vga huh? Has dvi.

Would the audio still come through the laptop's speakers, then?

If not, I don't know what I'd do about that.

Yes the audio would still go through the laptop's speakers. You could buy a $2 3.5mm speaker cable, plug into your laptop's output and into your TV's input. TV speakers >> laptop speakers.
