Basically I hooked up my Laptop with my 42-inch TV. For sound though I'm using 2 computer speakers which aren't that bad but I want better. My surround sound system downstairs was probably bought 10 years ago, so yeah. Unless anyone knows a way to use those cables with my PC, I'm out of ideas.

Logitech Z-5500. That's what I have and I love them. They're great speakers and you can get them for just over $200 on Newegg.

I absolutely agree - I have the older version (Z-680) and its actually what I use as my home theater. I honestly can't think of anything better for the price - and they're THX certified.

"Computer speakers" are just speakers with an amplifier built in to one of the speakers.

You can use any regular old speakers with a computer just fine; you just have to run it through an amplifier (or receiver).

if you're not going for or need 5.1 surround, the z-2300s can pump out quite a lot of sound themselves and are plenty good enough for most. My bro has the 2300's which he picked up for about 100 two years ago. I'm actually considering these for my 40" hdtv as well (also hooked up to laptop)

    Computer - 3.5mm to RCA cable/optical out - reciever - speakers

    In that order :p

Or just get some dedicated "computer" speakers, and deal with the lackluster performance, but enjoy the lower price tag.

Lackluster  Did you ever hear a set Z5500 or Z2300? I own both the Z2300 and Z680 (old version of the Z5500) let me tell you they are anything but lackluster. Klipsh, Bose and now Kef all make "computer" speakers that are quite good. If you have an available receiver / amplifier then yes, just get a cable (RCA or digital depending on the outputs of your laptop) and you can hook up any speakers. If you don't then it all depends on how much money you are willing to spend, if you want surround (5.1) or simply stereo (2.1) ect.

I still honestly believe that for the money (if you don't have a receiver) the Z5500 are your best bet. You will enjoy THX-certified, 505-watt 5.1 digital surround sound. But ten again, its all a matter or taste and presonal preference!

I like clarity in my music, rather an overpowering bass. I wouldn't spend more than $100 on computer speakers, and those would either be the Logitech Z2300 or the Swan M10's. Upwards of that, and I am inclined to recommend some bookshelves.

I've got a Harmon Kardon AVR146 and Polk RTi4's in boxes downstairs, just waiting for christmas (I buy myself gifts, haha). I loved how they sounded when I test-fired them

Well worth the $4 cable for the possibility of better sound and a fatter wallett.
