Evening guys I am looking to purchase a new monitor with an IPS panel with a budget of $250 Canadian. I have looked around and considering between the Dell UltraSharp U2312HM and HP Pavilion 25xi. Here are the specs for these two monitors:

    Dell UltraSharp: - 23 inches

UltraSharp U2312HM 23-inch Widescreen Flat Panel Monitor : Computer Components | Dell Canada

    = $209+other fees

    HP 25xi - 25 inches

    =$250+other fees

HP Pavilion 25xi 25-inch Diagonal IPS LED Backlit Monitor-U.S. - English localization - HP Shopping Canada

They are both within my budget. I would appreciate any advice and suggestions about which way to go..

I plan on using this monitor as my primary display and it's going to support basic day-to-day operations and office work, nothing too intense. Maybe a bit of gaming here and there and off course for watching HD movies.

    Thanks in advance

    Dell.

Better in pixel pitch (less grainy), brightness and color reproduction. Plus you get USB ports.

I have a Dell Ultrasharp U2311H and it's easily the best screen I've ever used (and I'm in IT so I use a lot). Brightness, color and even response time are impeccable. The HP display, while good, is not in the same class. Also the 25xi is glossy so it's a non-starter for office work, at least for me.

Dell UltraSharps are beautiful screens. I have the 2312 and it's a gorgeous display. I got mine for 180 plus tax from the Outlet.

Thanks guys I will be getting Dell. I have read reviews and some tend to fault level of brightness i.e. it's too bright. Now i do have sensitive eyes and I tend to prefer screens that are less bright. Would this be a problem or can I simply turn it down? because some have said that even at the lowest brightness level, it's still too bright.. can you confirm this?

    Thanks again

I read some of those same reviews and I can't for the life of me figure out what they're talking about. At the brightest setting it is definitely too bright to use comfortably for long periods of time, especially in low light settings, but I think I turned mine down to 25% and it's perfectly fine. I'll check the exact settings when I get home tonight.

^ Probably the people who use it in a completely dark room. Their eyes might find it really bright even if its set to the lowest brightness. This is because your pupils will dilate to compensate for lack of light and it can be straining when constantly changing from dark scenes to bright scenes.

If you dont use it in a completely dark room should be fine, otherwise you might need to add bias lighting.

Yeh if you could let me know what your settings are for brightness it would give me some idea in terms of whether this is something do-able for me,

I have it set to 60% brightness. It's not that bright unless you're using it in a darkened room.
