I am getting a dell xps m1710 and I need to get a good backpack for it! I'm really worried about padding for the computer and ME! Especially as far as the padding on the shoulder straps goes.... I'm going to be attending classes so it also needs to be pretty big! I'm looking at the targus XL but im worried about how comfortable it is to me.. I would be happy with any suggestions and really really realllllyyy apprieciate people who own a big laptop and have experience! thanks in advance!

I just purchased a Samsonite Sport from Newegg Link

Its for a 17" Toshiba and it seems to be padded pretty well. There are 3 pieces of padding on the back between you and the laptop and then theres a thin layer of padding on the other side of the pouch the laptop fits into. I put my notebook in just as a test fit and it fit fine, I havent had to actually use my backpack yet since I just bought my notebook.

If you wanted to you could probably add another layer of foam or something yourself if you wanted to, in any backpack.

Here is a pic of mine:

I can also take a pic of the interior if you want.

Yeah, its a pretty big backpack but then again the notebook is pretty big also.

A few pics of the laptop sitting on top of the backpack with a ruler for size comparison:

check out their stuff it looks really cool. Ive seen one in person and was very impressed. I dont own one however.

It seems like the only backpack worthy of a 3k notebook.

I just got an Inspiron E1705 and am also looking for a backpack for a 17" laptop. I really liked the hard backpacks at http://www.axio-usa.com/ but need something a little bigger as I'm going to be taking this to school and need extra room for books.

Also, I was thinking of getting the XPS backpack then just buying a hard sleeve for the laptop. Any ideas on where to get a sleeve that does not cost $100?

    Yes it is very expensive.

It is high high quality though. The zipper itself is what impressed me most I dont think ive seen that durable a zipper before.

Its a ferrari type item I would not call it a great value. The worlds best backpack is no more functional than the worlds worst one.

I dont even have any sort of reason why a hard pack would protect it any better. Just from flying rocks on a motorcycle. This pack in basis is a motorcycle equipment bag meant to look like the bags that go on motorcycles.

As I said it is more form that function they are selling. But they are *****en

as far as size.... I dont think you can fit anything much larger than the one i saw on your back. I think you need the one called urban.

ok, I would have to think that the XPS bag would be a good pick...my only problem is that it says XPS on it really big and stands for Xcuse me, Please Steal!
--the axio hybrid bag looks like a good pick, it is 130+19 for shipping
-----it is big and spacious and comes with its own removable sleave
--Targus XL about 60 + shipping
-----cheaper, lost of room, but not as stylish

I would buy which ever one is more comfortable that is what really matters to me

if you are in college, and your parents help you pay for it chances are that your parent homeowners insurance covers you dorm! so your laptop, in that case, would be protected...but there are always the deductables

    Just FYI...

Dell's XPS and 17" backpack they use with the E1705 are not tested to the same vibration/shock standards as the over the shoulder bag. If you read the fine print this is explained. I think this is do to the lack of some hard plastic and padding in the laptop. That's why I opted for the shoulder bag..though comfort wise...I regret it.
