at the front of your laptop, under the play button (media buttons), there is a little black thing (kinda wiggles a bit), that is the IR port, I have it on my 1520, so you should have it also. they put it in a bad spot though, your remote might work, just make sure nothing blocks the port, btw the IR port is always on and ready :)

As far as I know (via my experimenting with an HP IR remote with my m1530), the only thing that will work on that IR port (by default, at least) is the included Expresscard remote. If programs exist that can allow you to use a universal remote, that would be pretty awesome, but I don't know of any.

In other news, camcorders and digital cameras can see IR light and can be used to check if the laptop's IR port is working--that is if the correct IR port drivers and hardware are installed and everything else checks out OK.

I've used the IR port on an old Dell laptop (like Dimension 4100 old) to sync a Palm. The only software I installed was Palm's desktop/hotsync, but was not aware that it controlled the IR. Never poked around the drivers to see if one was there all the time. Time for some googling, I suspect...

As is most often the case if the laptop has an IR port, said IR port is there for data transfer--at up to 4 MB/s or so.

Some laptops, like my trusty old Toshiba Satellite 5205, have two IR ports: one is for in/out data transfer and the other is input-only for the IR media player remote control.
