I was wondering, does Dell Inspiron (9100) powersupply work with HP 8170w?
They have same connectors and same voltages if I remember right. I think both are even "smart" like HP advertises its own powersupply. If it were just the voltage and wattage raitings, there wouldn't be a question. But due the "smart" thing, I would like to know is that smart some kind data protocol the powersupply and computer uses to communicate between each others? And if so, then are those data protocols compatible on the two brands (HP and Dell)?

They probably are not compatible...

Actually they will fit but the computer will reject it thus making it useless

Tried it before, didn't work.

If these 2 PS have same connector and output, you can use them.
Smart is buzz word to a power supply that 'reads' whether battery is fully charged and stops to 'pump' from outlet.
Same 'smart' chargers you can find for AA rechargeable batteries -
You mean that if i have a non-smart PS it continues to charge the battery even when it doesn't need to and constantly overload it?
Good thing i don't have the battery inserted when i use mine on the desk.... -
Its pretty much a standard feature of all laptops made in the last 10 years...You can safely put your battery back in now.
