    hi i have a 2.5" external harddrive USB 2.0

it is the WD Elements Portable 320GB.

so the problem is that. when i plug it in my windows xp computer, it unmount correctly after ejecting the drive. the drive would soon power down after the drive is ejected.

in vista after i unmount, the drive unmount fine from windows. but the drive would not spun down, it just continue spinning. is this normal? do i need to wait until the drive is turned off before unplugging the USB, or is it allright to plug it out when the drive is spinning.

    thanks

You should be fine unplugging it while its still spun up, assuming you don't run around shaking the drive. Actually, you should be fine unplugging it while its still mounted as well.

Oh, and your spinning down problem is not so much an xp vs vista difference, but a different computer difference.
