Dual link DVI for high resolution displays, or two DVI ports for two monitors? The former requires an active adapter (Accell comes to mind), the latter just enables two mirrored displays (not very useful).

I am trying to have two separate screens with DVI to them from my Alienware m15x, instead of having one DVI and one VGA.

Considering HDMI has the same bandwidth as DVI it's not going to work, you can only split a DP port if it's 1.2, and even then there are no MHL hubs that I know of.

You'll need to look at the Matrox DualHead2Go and TripleHead2Go solutions if you want to use two separate DVI monitors. Pricey but I've heard good things. The T2G-D3D-IF seems to be the best fit for your needs but the D2G-A2D-IF might be a lower cost VGA->2x DVI solution.

Keep in mind with Matrox units your just combining monitors into a larger virtual monitor not getting separate displays.

The software it uses is designed to help give you a workflow as if the displays were sepearte (like maximize a window to a single monitor) but they are indeed one display and sometimes that can be a problem for some applications.

I sent back the matrox I ordered for work for this reason and went with another solution that was both cheaper and worked much better.

Its not run from your video card so its not suitable for gaming for movies but for anything desktop/web related its perfect.

As for the OPs goal. If your laptop can run a display from the DVI & VGA at the same time (in many/most situations its one or the other not both at the same time) just do that. VGA is not the devil and gives quality on par with the digital variants.
