Do I need a notebook skin/sleeve? I have a backpack (from Dell) and a messenger bag (from Targus) for my laptop and I use one of them depending on how I feel.

Should I buy a notebook sleeve/skin for added protection whenever I insert the laptop in either bag?

How much padding should a bag have? How thick?

If the bags you have are designed for a laptop, they are probably well padded. You could add a sleeve, but I don't think it's a necessary practice, unless you are unusually prone to dropping your bag or getting slammed into walls.
