I know that for other electronics (mp3 players, camera lcd's, etc) some sort of screen protector is virtually mandatory. I know that my zen vision: m has a best skin ever and it is completely scratch less. Are glossy laptop screens the same? I'm mostly worried about the keyboard/touch pad scratching the screen when the lid is closed.

As I see it, I have two options- get some sort of plastic cover that may degrade the picture quality, or get a "mat" to put in between the keyboard and the lcd and be a little less protected when the screen is open. I guess I could also just stick some fabric in there and save a few dollars...

Has anyone had any experience with these products? Maybe I'm just paranoid and it's not even worth it.

Nope. They don't scratch easily as long as you are sensible about it. I remember I put my laptop in my bookbag and somehow the screen opedn a bit and pens and pencils and all osrts of crap flew in but nothing happened. I think the easiest way to scratch them (like a car) is actually to clean them with wrong material. Something rough will leave small scratches and even something like a soft cloth will often get small particles then can scratch the screen. Just get a microfiber cloth and you will be fine.

But it differs from screen to screen. You don't get that typical "touching-a-lcd-reaction" if you drag your finger on my screen, but my friends acer, on the other hand, gets it in abundance.

I'd recommend you get a protector from shaggymac. (or something similar)
