I see no reason not to get one. I have one made by GE that I bought at Target for $15. It's very tiny, optical, and has a retractable USB cable. I use it whenever I'm at a desk, cybercafe, etc.
Wireless mice are a different problem. If you get a wireless optical mouse, you have to remember to turn it on and off or the battery will die. You can get a wireless mouse with a ball, which only uses power when the mouse is moving, but then you have the typical problems associated with a ball mouse.

When I 1st. got my thinkpad I used a USB 3-button wheel mouse. Then after a week or two of wrapping up, unplugging, unwrapping and plugging in, I decided to try using the touchpoint and pad. Within about a week I was faster with the touchpoint and my thumb on the pad than I ever was with the mouse. Now there's no going back[ :)]

I use a standard size Logitech Scroll-wheeled Optical USB mouse. I don't like small mice or trackballs at all, and the optical works on the couch, my pant leg or wherever.

The HP mouse offered in Radio Shack isn't bad (39.95). Wireless and full-size. I usually get about two weeks of use w/o charging (Use: approx 2 -3 hours a night). I also like the fact that the batteries are removable and it accepts NiMH or Alkaline.

A full size mouse is actually quite comfortable to use. For me, it's because it's wireless. That gives me the freedom to use it pretty much anywhere which makes it less awkward. Prior, I had a mini-optical mouse that was corded. At first I liked it, but soon my fingers began overlapping and I would hit the wrong button. Towards the end, I started to cramp in my hands if I used it longer than 20 minutes. Wouldn't change for the world.....well...let me not say that. [ :D]

I use a USB trackball from macally that has a BIG trackball (about 2/3 the size of a pool ball). The advantage here is that I don't need any surface movement area, as it has a flat base, and I can put it on a table, my leg, the seat next to me on the train, wherever. Even with a laptop optical mouse, you still need a little room to move the mouse around. I have also become very good using the touch pad for general computer use, but I would say that it is EXTREMELY difficult, at best, to play Quake 3, Half Life, etc. using the built in touchpad, or the 'pencil eraser' pointer. This trackball I have was originally $29, but Fry's had it on sale for $9.99, so I picked up 3 of them (home, office, and one for my fiancee's lappy). If anyone is interested, it is the macally model UTB-800. There are many good trackballs out there though (although personally, the ones you control with your thumb just kill my hand after about 15-20 minutes).

    Cheers,

    Stevo
