I owned a Y580 and bought a generic keyboard cover (something like this) I think it pretty useful and just curious how many of you use something like this.

I'm rather clumsy so I spilled drinks all the time. It saved my previous laptop from badly spilled :D
It keep the dust off the keyboard.
It might be more comfortable to type without it but I don't really mind

So tell me what you think.

No. I don't use a keyboard cover. I don't need a keyboard cover. I don't keep my drinks within spill range of my keyboard. :D

Same I keep drinks and food away and keep my hands clean so nothing builds up on my keyboard.

My main keyboard is blank white pbt keys and they are still pristine white. I just wipe it down with alcohol once in a blue moon to get what little oil and dirt/dust that builds up naturally off the keys.

Time to get yourself cups w/ lids :)

Pretty much the same as well. Never felt the need to use a keyboard cover.

That "keyboard cover" looks awful OP. It's just a clear plastic film. I would never put something that ugly on my laptop. If you're gonna go the keyboard cover route at least get something customized for your specific laptop which fits the contours of the keys.

All my notebooks have replaceable keyboards, so if it ever wears put or gets too ugly for some reason (note I am very careful with my laptop keyboards, less with the desktop ones), I'll buy a replacement and be done with it.

I did buy a cover specific to my model. But it just felt obstructive and not as tactile.
Hmm.. I don't spill my stuff to my laptop anymore but it still gave me secure feeling :p

I dont like the idea of covering my laptop keyboard because i believe some of them heat generated by the system is being dissipated via the keyboard too. And I dont want no to feel the pleasure of tapping on my excellent latitude key!

Very going point - the cooling systems in many modern notebooks are designed to use holes in the keyboard; even if it's not designed to be part of the cooling system, some heat usually escapes through the keyboard; a cover would naturally inhibit that transfer. Also I agree about covers making the keyboard feel less precise.

Personally I use the keyboard as-is, no cover; the keyboard is a wear and tear item; I'd just order a replacement if it wore out (this has not yet happened with any of the notebooks I've owned, though I have replaced several desktop keyboards).

I've never busted a keyboard, and keyboard covers just ruin the slick aesthetics of most laptops.

If i do bust a keyboard, i'll just pay 50$ for a replacement, no biggie, since it never happened to me.

I have tried included keyboard covers that are included with other products and do not like them. I just don't like the way they make the keyboard feel and type. I wouldn't buy one on purpose.

If I were to use one, yeah i would definitely get one that's meant for my keyboard. The plain plastic film over the keyboard doesn't do it for me.

I never used the silicon keyboard covers, but I have faithfully used a Shaggymax on all my laptops the past few years.

Nope feels to odd for my taste, same thing goes for silicon covers for game console controllers; I just like to use a keyboard or any other input device the most natural way it was designed to be used.

I would have concerns of heat issues also.

    I second the shaggymax suggestion.

So you just put this on your laptop when you don't use it? Does closing the lid not keep all the dust out?

I use one of those soft flexible plastic one but it's mainly for when the laptop is off to avoid dust and all. I definitely don't keep it on while in use because it increases heat quite a bit. Typing feels unnatural as we'll.

    No, it does not.

I have a couple of those (ShaggyMax) that are only used on machines which are to be kept in pristine condition until the right kind of buyer shows up.

More importantly, they protect the LCD from pressure marks that keyboard/trackpoint contact tends to create when the lid is closed.

I used to use them for my previous laptops that didn't have chiclet keyboards. Now for my modern notebooks I no longer use them because I love the feeling of typing on chiclet keyboards, plus I believe they're more resistant to collecting dust and hair than older keyboards.

I don't ever place liquids anywhere near my electronics, but I do eat food near them and sometimes they can get greasy. I prefer to just wipe them off every now and then; this allows for the preservation of the "full feeling" of using a manufactured keyboard.

If you want to protect your keyboard, try thin coats of Krylon Fusion Clear Coat. It is an automotive clear coat that you can spray over it.

I do wipe my laptop keyboard often... first using a slighty moist cotton cloth followed with dry wipe with fluffy microfibre.... that usually follows with a few good shakes upside down to clear some of them loose crumbs in between. Keyboard still looks new after a year! Not that I am bothered much whether they look new or watnot... its just that I do prefer to dance them tips on my fingers in clean keys if I can help it. At home my latitude is parked on dock to utilise two monitors then a Logitech K800 takes the keyboard duty. To be honest I do prefer the tactile feel of my E6320 keys better than those on Logi K800. I suppose a perfert keyboard that suits to everyone's taste is quite elusive and one cannot make a purchasing decision of a pc based on keyboard feel and quality alone. Keyboard cover takes away a lot from the pleasure of using the main user interface of interacting with a pc and I do use keyboard a lot....

I don't use a keyboard cover. And yes, I spilled cognac on my laptop once.

It resulted in some non-working keys for almost a week, and after a year or two that keyboard had a problem with one then-spilled key being pressed all the time, so I had to replace it.

My opinion is that, since all those covers make your work uncomfortable, it's better to get a new keyboard (or repair the spilled one) than use them. However, I must also notice that some notebooks with weird keyboards really require a cover all the time.

Definitely not. I've had one at work before (not by choice) and they're completely annoying to me.
