Having swapped-out the HDD in my DV3 for an SSD, I find myself in possession of a spare 500GB 2.5" HDD and it seems like a waste to just leave it sat around.

A couple of years back, I became aware of a range of products from a company called Addonics that allow for external HDD enclosures to be docked into a desktop - the most suitable of which would be the Ruby HDD kit or the Jupiter HDD kit.
However, it looks as though their enclosures require an external PSU when not docked, which is definitely not what I'm after.

Of course I intend to investigate matters further and see if I can find a more suitable solution but, in the mean time, I was wondering if anyone knew of any other similar products that are available.
Ideally, though this may be pushing it a little, I'd like a kit in which the enclosure would be capable of being powered and connected using my DV3's combination eSATA/USB port( as detailed in this thread) - I'm aware there aren't many enclosures out there that allow for this, so it may not be possible but if you don't ask, you don't get...

My thanks to anyone who can help.

Thanks for the recommendation but that enclosure can't be docked with my desktop like the Addonics products.

Whilst it would be great to be able to get an enclosure that could be used with a single combo eSATA/USB cable, I would prefer to have one that could be docked and was just plain USB.
So, primarily I'm after a dockable 2.5" HDD enclosure but, if possible, one that could be used with the combo port.

That is pretty much precisely what I'm looking for - the connection on the drive looks like it would fit just fine with a single eSATA/USB combo cable, which would be ideal.

Just a shame it's silver and white... :p

    Care to point them out?

I searched for 'Addonics' as they were the brand I was aware of and I reasoned that if anyone else was looking for something similar, their products would've come up. None of the threads I found were suitable.
Searching for 'dockable external HDD' revealed nothing and searching for 'external HDD dock' brings up all kinds of threads that have nothing to do with what I'm looking for.

None of the enclosures linked-to in that thread are remotely close to what I'm looking for.
If you look at the two links to the Addonics products in my original post, you'll see what sort of thing I'm looking for, which is quite significantly different to what you are/were looking for.

    Thanks for the suggestion.
It's still not quite what I was after though.

What I want is a portable enclosure that I can use with my laptop but that can also be docked with my desktop. The IcyDock is pretty much ideal - you just slot the HDD in it's enclosure into the docking caddy in the desktop.
Unless I'm missing something, when I take the drive out of that dock, I wouldn't be able to use it as a portable HDD without fitting it into something else first.

The IcyDock that KLF suggested is definitely the fore-runner at the moment, unless there is a similar product out there that comes in black.
