Buying laptop to replace home desktop. Will pair w/docking station and separate monitor when at home. What 21-23" monitors should I look at? Hoping to spend around $250 max.

Is an IPS display really worth it if you don't need excellent viewing angles and color reproduction? I'd rather have a bigger display (since most consumers are not going to notice the difference) than a smaller IPS display for the same price. I do a little photo editing and watch videos on my LCD and I hardly consider an IPS panel as necessary.

TL;DR: I'd rather have a bigger normal LCD display than a smaller IPS LCD display for the same price.

Uh, he wanted a 21-23" and it's a 21.5". I don't get the appeal of a larger monitor with the exact same resolution as the smaller one, the pixels are larger, and he's already willing to spend up to $250 there's really no better deal than a $220 U2212HM in that price range for a good LCD panel.

If it's "bigger" in resolution, I'd be inclined to agree. But if it's larger in size, I'd strongly disagree. For under $250, you probably won't find any monitors with over 1920x1080 resolution, so it may be worth it getting an IPS display.

The Dell IPS monitors are nice, but if budget is a concern, a 1920x1080 TN display can be had for as little as $100 if you watch for sales, and I've seen LG IPS displays for as little as $140.

The Dell sounds pretty solid. Product details indicate an 8ms response time, while numerous monitors in this price range claim 5ms and even a few 2ms. What do these numbers mean practically and will any difference be significant for general family (i.e., no heavy gaming) use? Thanks again--first time shopping for a monitor in about eight years...

If you're not using a monitor for gaming, then response time shouldn't be an issue. Just to give you an example, most modern tv's have response times of 20-30ms ( from time an input is given on a controller to the time it happens on the tv). This is significantly higher than most new computer monitors, and yet it won't effect your normal tv viewing, or even most video gaming.

You won't notice the difference. There are other items in your system that will have a higher latency.

You can switch to game mode on a TV and it will turn off all image processing and give you a lower response time.

    It all adds up though.
