I have a dell xps 9550 laptop that i connect to an external monitor as my primary monitor. Its syncmaster t240 hd and its 24' and 1920 x 1200 resolution. I have an old asus 24' monitor that a while back no longer worked... it stopped working and i brought it to a few repair shops and they said it no longer works.

I recently turned it on and surprisingly works. i connected it to my laptop via hdmi to hdmi cable and it works just like it would with my samsung syncmaster.

This is the asus 24 monitor i have that is 1920 1200 resolution.

I want to be able to do dual monitor. Currently my laptop screen is extended to my primary monitor and i use it for youtube etc but do everything on big screen.

I only have one hdmi port on my dell laptop. So how do i do dual monitor setup? Also i assume i could do triple monitor setup with my laptop screen as the 3rd screen? I rarely would use that one though. I want to use 2 of these monitors i have and be able to drag things from one monitor to another.

The other thing though i notice is when i connected hdmi to hdmi from laptop to asus, there is no sound at all. I think this possible is due to it being damaged from a while back? Again, back then monitor completely stopped working. But now it worked. How do i fix the sound if i could? If i can't fix it, could i still use it as a 2nd monitor with the samsung syncmaster monitor as my primary monitor? Also this asus monitor has like dark spots throughout the screen. I used a wet one to wipe the screen but apparently those dark marks are inside the screen it seems. I googled and apparently this is water inside that caused it? That isn't that big of an issue but there are lot of these spots. But i want to be able to use a dual monitor setup. And if the sound doesn't work on this asus monitor, would the sound work when im using a dual monitor setup where i make the samsung the primary screen?

What do i need to buy to do this. I have one hdmi cable. I also have a vga to vga cable and hdmi to vga cable that came along with the asus monitor.

    Thanks.

@Drew1 use USB-C to HDMI adapter or cable for connecting second monitor. Alternatively, you could use a docking station to plug both monitors and probably power into a single port - it will be more comfortable, yet much more expensive.

As for sound, 1. you can select which sound source you use 2. I'd personally use laptop speakers instead of monitor, they will probably sound better.

    Good luck!

Hi there. In the dell thread, a mod mentioned.

You can use the HDMI out and then get an adapter for thunderbolt to HDMI or DVI since your syncmaster supports both. The cable Schmoo2k was talking about goes from thunderbolt to displayport which sadly your monitors don't support.

Okay so i would use my current hdmi to hdmi cable from my laptop to the asus monitor right?

The adapter for thunderbolt to hdmi to DVI... so you mean that cable would be plugged in from laptop to the syncmaster? So i have to search on amazon thunderbolt to hdmi or thunderbolt to dvi and get that cable?

So this is what i need right? And in the first link, it would be both the adapter and hdmi cable? And thunderbolt and mini displayport means the same thing right?

You say usb-c to hdmi, so you mean this?

    https://www.amazon.com/Cable-Matter...&qid=1535811863&sr=8-6&keywords=usb-c+to+hdmi

    https://www.amazon.com/Adapter-MOKi...&qid=1535811863&sr=8-8&keywords=usb-c+to+hdmi

Also, i have to buy another hdmi to hdmi cable since i only have 1 right?

So what is the difference between what you mentioned and the other person who said adapter for thunderbolt to hdmi? Bit confused here. Does one work better than the other or its the same thing.

Just buy a straight USB-C to DVI cable. Connect that to the Asus, the HDMI cable to the Samsung, and Bob's your uncle.

@Drew1 more like this. What input ports exactly do you have on your monitors? Even if you have DVI, I would not recommend it unless cable is really cheap - it's an obsolete interface, while another HDMI-HDMI or type C - HDMI cable will always be handy. And forget about VGA - it's 2k18 and nobody should suffer poor image quality it provides.

@Drew1 since you don't have second HDMI-HDMI cable, just get this.

@Drew1 fwiw Chinese sellers from eBay ship to most countries of the world for free, unlike Amazon. Regardless, good luck.
