(Not sure if this is the right forum)
I want to set up dual monitor at my desk, for when I'm not carrying my laptop around.
I want to be able to "extend desktop," but it's not working the way i wanted it to. I want it to open games or certain programs in the monitor, and keep the desktop, icons, task bar, etc, on the laptop screen. So far, I can only drag windows to the additional monitor, or clone the desktop.
I have Vista, and cant find any other additional settings. Can anyone help?

You're basically stuck on that. There's no way, as far as I know, to set it so everything open in the other monitor. However, as I'm sure you've figured out, if you are able to drag the window over, you can maximize it there and that would achieve what you were wanting. With games though, where you usually can't window it to move it over, you're pretty much stuck.

Basically windows sees you as having one main screen that has your taskbar on it. When you play games your games will always be on the main monitor and never the extended screens. To game on your external monitor, you will need to either make it your main one with the taskbar on it or use the external only.

some games have a setting called "use windowed mode."
i wont go on to explain what this means, as we're all bright around here. so go ahead and venture into your game settings and see if you can enable it.
In my experience though, windowed mode is usually slower than full screen, but im not sure about the performance implications in your case.
