Is there a way to get 5.1 surround sound on my E1705 without buying a sound card?

notta, you just have the bi-directional line out (headphone) jack
and you'll also have to wait for an expresscard sound card -
What is a good external sound card that supports 5.1?
-
You can buy a USB sound card from Creative. cost about 50$ or so. I hate the new express card they put in new systems. It won't work with most Express card outher because of different slots.

I have Soudblaster Audigy 2 NX USB2 card. It's really good, and will get you what you want and more. Can be found on eBay for $50 or less.
Technical characteristics include 7.1 surround, 24-bit/96kHz sound with 100+db SnR. I have expensive studio headphones and this card is definitely a match for them. -
Check these threads. Go for the Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS. I just picked one up. It is an amazing card. Supports 7.1 if you have that many speakers!
Here are the links to the forums. Check it out. Make sure it is compatible first.

We cannot use any standard PCMCIA Sound Card, bummer. -
It is possible depending on what speakers you have. I know that the higher end Logitech systems have a "matrix mode" built in so that you can connect the head unit to the computer with one cable from the line out port on the notebook (or headphone port) and it will emulate the rear, center, and subwoofer sounds. It is not true surround sound, but it doesn't actually sound too bad in movies and music. In games it's worthless, however. In order to get true surround and be able to use EAX and surround in games you'll need an external sound card.
