So, I got some new earbuds from skullcandy. They're the Full Metal Jackets (the high end ones) aka FMJ's and I'm wondering how much power I can give them while they are connected to my computer. They can easily and obviously handle all that my iPod throws at them, but I don't wanna kill them with the higher power my computer is capable of.
At 40% power there was definitely no distortion and volume was scaling properly. The thing is I have no idea what the output of my laptop's 3.5mm jack is in terms of wattage.
Here's the tech-specs, copied from mfr website:
Speaker Diameter: 11mm
Magnet Type: NdFeB
Frequency Response: 16-20k Hz
Impedance: 16 ohms
Max Input Power: 500mW
Cable Type: Nylon Braided
Cable Length: 1.2m
Plug Type: 3.5mm Gold Plated
I think 500mW is really high for 'buds, but I'm no expert on audio equipment. All of the other earbuds they make are rated for 100mW input power, so I guess my question is:
Does that mean I could give these 100% power from my laptop without blowing them? (Not that I would do this often, that would be hell on the ears)
*Disclaimer*: For those of you audiophiles out there, please don't rant about how I could of got klipsh S4's or shures etc. I got these FMJ's for 17$ shipped, with only a small blemish!![]()

Why would you ever do that? If it's louder than you can comfortably hear, (and there is distortion) then you will probably damage them. Might as well use your laptop speakers if you're not going to be wearing them in your ear.
On my laptop when using headphones, I generally don't even have to go any higher than a few steps from the lowest to have ear blasting volume (less than 10%). -
Laptop speakers are junk, even in the best case scenario. And sure, my z-2300's are nice (especially since I also connect my roommates speakers for a rear channel), but I can barely give them any volume without having RA's all over my ---. Dorms suck
My old headphones, some cheapo phillips product, distorted wayy before it was uncomfortable. I guess I'm wondering, does no distortion = no damage to the drivers? I think I'm wondering more to see what these are capable of than to actually use that full power.
I get curious about stuff.
*edit* I kinda also have been wondering what the actual wattage of laptop 3.5mm outputs is for a while now. -
Just use your ears to judge??
I can easily max out my Sennheiser IE8 without any problems on my Vaio SZ with the internal card.
Using an X-Fi Go on some songs that becomes too much - not because I notice any distortion but because it's too loud for my ears...
Earbuds w/ laptop, how much power is OK?
