http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/usb-gadgets/bfa3/ You can use this to run system monitoring software when your gaming in full screen mode. It can show you CPU/GPU temps., FPS of the game your playing, etc. and you won't have the distracting text up in the corner of the main monitor.

I know it's expensive, really only for hardcore proformance buffs.

Cool, this little screen moves my stats monitors further away from my center view meaning that I will need to spend more precious time to move my eyeballs further away to see the distraction. Brilliant.

I'd rather buy a cheap 4:3 flatscreen LCD for $40-$50 just for monitoring.

But will that cheap flatscreen run off the power of the display connection? The nice thing about these is for laptops it runs off the USB power and data. Only one cable to hook up. Besides... you don't have to just use it for system monitoring. What about if you're waiting for an important email or something and want to play games to pass the time? Hell, how about your Steam friends list or something like that, instead of shift+tab or alt+tabbing elsewhere? I don't need one myself, but I can see where some people would.

Heck, not even gaming... just an extra monitor so you can use a program full-screen and put a web page or something else on the other monitor. Dual monitors is very useful for business use.

Newegg also has some similar ones with a higher resolution and a bit larger for very little more: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16824185014

Oh, and if you don't need the touchscreen there is a cheaper version here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/computing/usb-gadgets/c609/

Think i'd rather have a second monitor, even if it's for laptops I'm not sure I'd want to lug that around just to keep track of stats. If I wanted to read an email badly enough or do something else besides gaming I'd probably just alt tab and do it, otherwise I prefer to have any other screens turned off so their not so much of a distraction.

It is a second monitor. 800x480 isn't really that small, either. Or 1024x600. Those are both quite adequate resolutions for more than just emails and such, and the monitors are made to be portable. Honestly, I might even get one just for work because I do so much stuff that is a lot handier with dual monitors.

Anyone know if you could access the touchscreen while gaming without it minimising your game?
That is the biggest PITA for me, it always takes so long to tab back in. Very often I just want to quickly add a friend into a skype call whilst playing etc

That should be doable if you went and made your game run in windows mode shouldn't it, Thats how I usually go about it when I want to alt+tab or perform some other tasks at the same time. I figure the majority of the games would have this option.
