Would like recommendations for a backpack for a 17" widescreen notebook. I have read the other threads for packs for 15.4" notebooks but no help. I would like space for other gear as well. I appreciate any input and help.

I hear ya...all the backpacks I've seen are way too big--they are almost always bigger and bulkier than your average backpack. The ones I've seen in the store absolutely dwarf my 5'10" 170 lb. frame :(

You may want to consider a nice neoprene sleeve to put your notebook in and just throwing it into the backpack of your choice. They go for around $20-$30 and completely protect your notebook (and only your notebook). If your interested just google "17" laptop neoprene sleeve". Good luck whatever you do!

Why don't you take a look at http://www.crumplernyc.com/

It's a funny little website, downright bizarre... But I like the bags there myself, maybe you'll find something.

    Hi A.C.,

I got the Targus Platinum carrying case with my NX860XL from Gateway. I talked them into throwing it in on the deal. It is far from a compact; you could lose the state of Texas in it. There is plenty of room for the 17" notebook, paper files, accessories, DVDs and software. It has pockets, zippers, velcro and snaps that I still haven't discovered. It's more suitcase sized, but if you like to take it all with you, it's a good choice. It's perfect for me to carry everything from the house to the fifth wheel. I also saw some nice 17" metal cases on eBay.

    Here is a one I found on Ebags.com http://www.ebags.com/products/index.cfm?modelid=59045
I like it for the seperate, side-loading laptop compartment.
But it is not "small" by most definitions. Ebags has a lot of laptop bags/backpacks. you might find one more your size with some searching.

I also got the Targus backpack with my NX860XL. It's got plenty of room for the laptop, 2 large binders, cables, power brick, travel adapters, extra speakers, water bottle, mouse...

The flap with the two latches on the outside is handy for shoving a jacket through. The handle on top is easy to grab and carry with.

I would have liked to see some straps along the sides to colapse the bag so it has a thinner profile when not filled. The NX860XL also does not completely fill it's pocket so I may add another layer of padding - what's already there is pretty stout stuff though.

This might be a bit big for most but I love the Mobile Edge MEBPP1 ( http://www.mobileedge.com//items.asp?cid=3&scid=3&pid=5). This charcoal colored backpack has all the room you can ask for. It is a bit of a tight fit for my 17" Dell E1705, but the bag has plenty of space for extra items. Check it out...

Take a look at the Burton Premium Pack. The bag is fairly large length wise at 19 inches, however it is very low profile meaning it doesn't stick out like most backpacks. Check it out at ebags.com
