Laptop in question is an MSI GX660R-060US, latest drivers. (Particularly, newest NEC 3.0 and Intel IRST drivers).

Enclosure is this Masscool model. Hard drive is some 5400rpm 750GB Hitachi that I was able to grab for a not-so-insulting price.

So here's the deal: When plugging it directly into either USB 3.0 port on my MSI, the enclosure is not detected. There's power going into the disk, and I can see the light glowing and the platters spinning, but it won't show up in disk management.

The enclosure shows up in USB 2.0 ports on my MSI and my Dellienware M11x, both when directly plugged into the port and when passing through a 2.0 hub.

Other 3.0 enclosures (I have two of the 2-HDD 3.5'' Ineotech models and an Eagle dock) work perfectly fine.

If I plug a 2.0 hub into a 3.0 port, then connect the enclosure to the hub, the enclosure gets detected.

so, anyone knows what's up? I came across this answer from Tom's Hardware, though it was about a desktop. Is this a known problem?

Just a bump, if anyone has any idea.

I would say that it is a problem with the enclosure and it should be returned. I would also suggest that you stick with more mainstream manufacturers like Thermaltake and Vantec.

I would suspect that its a typically first generation USB 3.0 port connectivity issues where something is not quite compatible.

I have an express card superspeed port and my USB 3.0 thumb drive works perfectly, while my 3.0 enclosure with a Seagate 7200 RPM HDD, shows the sames issues as yours.

Well, darn. Looks like no easy fix, then.

Eh, not too much of a problem, in any case. Thanks for the confirmation.

When I had USB issues a long time ago I fixed most if not all problems by changing the drivers.

I got rid of the stock drivers that I forget what brand they were (think NEC) and now use the Renesas drivers.

Indeed. In the beginning the card wouldn't recognized anything or work at all. After exhaustive updating with various drives, and through trial and error, I finally resolved to be satisfied with one working and took what I could get.
