    Hi,

I purchased this sound card for my notebook (Inspiron 1720) because I wanted an optical connection from my laptop to my 5.1 surround system (logitech z5450)...thought it was strange that it didn't say 5.1 on the box and it appears it isn't 5.1!! Am I right in thinking that you need a connector with the card to get true 5.1 sound?? The adapters I've seen do not use an optical connection...which is why I made purchased this product in the first place!!

    Any help gratefully appreciated!

cheers Gophn- but does this connector mean that I don't connect with optical out/in to my surround sound?

SPDIF is another way that sounds can connect to a 6-CH to 8-CH receiver.

... which means that you do not have to get that extra accessory.

    again with the SPDIF question....

    i went over it here:

    and here:

you can use SPDIF (digital coax) if you are connecting it to a digital 6 to 8 channel receiver.

you can use a 3.5mm to RCA mono.

    a setup like this:

    $16

    OR

you can get a cheap 3.5mm to RCA female cable, and just use a basic RCA cable from that to the receiver
