Im looking for a nice external storage-device, as slim as possible, and im trying to get something to "match" the macbook im getting.
So, something along the theme of white and shiny, that fits a 2.5" disc.. ultra-preferable if I can get one that comes without a disc since I will have one laying about anyways... but that would just be a bonus :)

The western digital passports are pretty nice. it comes in white, black, aluminum and more. It has no power cord and uses a single usb port. I just picked up a black one last weekend and its a nice piece of hardware.

the aluminum would match the new unibody macbooks perfectly.

Just be careful. Macbooks are known for cheaping out on the usb ports and not giving them enough power. A lot of people have issues getting them to recognize 2.5" hard drives without an external power source. If you have that problem try another usb port on the computer or remove other usb devices you might have plugged in.

The Seagate Freeagent Go drives are alumimum and should match the new Macbooks very well.

I have pretty much decided to go with the white version of the macbook, since the hardware spec is the same, the flashier model is just, flashier.

So im actually looking for a white case, not metal :)

nizzy1115: Thanks for pointing that out, could be good to know.

One comment - you could put a powered USB Hub before the Drives... and put more than one drive into that...
    Advantage:
Drive get's enough power, also only 1 cable to plug into computer
    Disadvantage:
    Slower transfer speeds

If you get more than 1 drive this may be a good idea.

Yes, that could be a good idea, but the big disadvantage is:
More cables and gear to carry around, I wanto be as mobile as possible.
Transfer speed wont be that big of a problem, what I want is a very slimline 120-200GB storage to carry with me, at home I got a NAS-unit with 4x1TB discs in it.

Thanks, although I havent actually bought it yet, just made up my mind, still sorting some practical things before I can even use the laptop, so I will probably go pick it up in a store in the beginning of next week, or something similiar :)

I suppose in that case yes.
    My setup is immobile.
    Ah well...

Just thinking - some USB drives have a "y-cable" with two USB plugs to offer extra power - that may help.

I was in a Apple reseller shop yesterday talking about the laptops, comparing etc, and ive "upgraded" my purchase to the aliminium/unibody chassi (primarily because of the CPU, secondarily for the illuminated keyboard for working in dark environments, which I will actually have use off).

So I think finding a good external storage has become alot easier since aluminium-looking case are alot more common then the "apple white" :)

Ill have the 250gb disc that comes in the macbook to put in the storage aswell so I will just need a case without a disc in it.

Theoretically I think it should be easier to get a 5400 2.5" disc running through USB easier then a random 3.5", simply because of the lower effect needed to start it up, hopefully I am right ;)

The iOmega Ego comes in "Alpine White."

    http://go.iomega.com/section?SID=ee8d811ad9296160caa16c819cacd06ce8f:4760&secid=76839

These drives normally require a Y-cord, taking up two USB ports, but, for the typically underpowered Macbook USB ports, this may not be an issue because you MAY have to use a Y-cord anyway with any portable external you choose.

I had two of these but returned them because I would rather use a single USB port. I will, say, however, that the appear really rugged.

The iOmega site says that this drives requires no additional external power, but my experience was that it does.

I think im running out of internet to browse..

As a hint for anyone searching the forums and finding this thread ill post something ive come across:

    http://www.mapower.com/Product.asp?CateID=78&LineID=9

Seems to be a very good solution.
Aliminium surface, slim design, 2.5" IDE or SATA depending on model, and can be powered through 2xUSB.
